Visiting my sites by my self has a great effect on the Alexa stats.
So a rool is:
A site can not be better than the Alexa results,
but a site can be far worth.
One of my clients has a real estate web site. He installed the Alexa toolbar on 4 computers in his office and made it to a rank around 50.000
Ad placement, ad value, smart pricing and geographic location of visitors are all factors in pricing that aren't measurable by alexa ranking.
Alexa ranking is a terrible way to gauge traffic, in any case. Webmasterworld is in the top 1000, but is obviously not one of the 1000 most visited websites online.

It's far more likely, that a web professional has the Alexa toolvar than the reader of all this "computer magazines" creating fear from all this spy ware.
Most funny experience with the toolbar:
An owner of a dating web site contacted my internet promotion company for SEO.
I visited his site and found in the impressum a visitor statistic absolut not matching his Alexa stats.
So I wrote him back
"With all my experiences as a SEO, we can improve the site so much, that You will reach in 6 month the statistics, You already claim in Your impressum"
I got no contract, but the statistic disappeared.
