btw: Why not use a random algorithm where the ad will show in one out of ten. This will save all the cookie-coding effort.

The random code would not achieve what he wanted. By setting a cookie he ensures that only 1 in 10 individual users will see the ad.

I can add a fair bit of update to the original thread topic - have asked an admin to bump it for me as it's an old thread and they get locked down after x months inactivity....

I'm seeing fewer and fewer banner ads these days, partly due to my browser (Firefox).
As a result, when they DO show up, they are much more, er, memorable.
The idea of showing them less, or at random, appeals to me somehow. -Larry
