Many adsense publishers may be unfamiliar with business management, having come from an employed situation where they focused on one function only (eg: web design) and had a regular paycheque income.
What do you think are the most important business practices that Adsense publishers should use?
Nope, not guilty. :)
Misplaced my list but
#1. CPC
#2. CPM
#3. Direct sales of space
#4. Affilates
#5. Ebook sales
And, oh yeah
#6. Sales of related reference books.
Right now that's all I have thought of.
The direct sales ad can be worked in nicely with the text and should be worth more than normal. I hope. ;)

But until now, I discovered only systems where affliate does not work.
For example a affliate to sell software.
In many areas this would work.
But it was a software for advertising agencies.
So the visitor followed the link.
The visitor did not buy by online credit card.
The visitor looked up the telephone number, because he likes to talk with a human. Where is my share?
Or I had a unique affliat contract with a medical technic company. An unique treatment equipment for 10.000,-EUR. I should receive 7% per sale. I dreamed that this will be....
But nearly no doctors visited the site. Only patients.
So I think some 1000 of this visitors visited their doctor. "I have seen in internet a new treatment method, do You have this....."
Now imagine a traveling sales man visits a doctor. The doctor looks on the brochure, thinks this is the equipment where already 2 of his patients have asked him about and signs the pruchase contract.
Where are my 7%?
Not a single sales commission in 3.5 years and 128 thousand visitors.
After the company refused to put AdSense on this site, I did not renew the domain name and finished this great affliate programm.
I may put adsense on after it gets in the serps and gradually work toward the other methods. The site is rather small at the moment, only about 200 pages but it is the kind where you can write until the cows come home and still have room to "grow", which I also have mapped out to do.
I have it all written but being a nitpicker I have some ideas to make it more easily navigable which I have to figure out how to put what. LOL
I figure 2 years and it will make my main money site seem small by comparison of income.
They say an ant can't move a rubber tree plant but she had high hopes, high apple pie hopes. whoops there goes another rubber tree plant!

Anyway, #7 I've been considering is 'merchandising'. This doesn't mean we're getting into 'real work' like production or distribution, but there are websites where you upload images, then they will sell mugs, t-shirts, mouse-mats etc with those images.
We may try this on certain types of pages where Adsense doesn't make any/much money (probably for good reasons - our page provides an end point for their internet surfing).
Hope it works for you but that would not fit into my theme. Durn- missed opportunity ;)
I have ideas for interrelated subjects that should attract ads from several different types of sites whose core product/service is the same as my basic theme.
Ah well, dreams are nice but they sure are a lot of work. :)
Yep, Sure glad she denied it, I like to have not known myself after going around half the night mumbling, "who am I" and then looked in the mirror, "whew, ok that's me".

My sleep fogged mind just caught what you said about being the stopping point of their surfing the web.
AHA! so you are the one telling everyone they have reached the end of the internet? 8-))
I knew someday I would find out. My brother told me a year ago he could quit surfing now as he had been through the entire internet....a website told him so....LOL

Your stats are stuck, too? Mine haven't changed for 17 minutes - I'm beginning to suspect that Teeceo has sabotaged my site and I expect to receive a demand for protection money any minute! :-)
Seriously, there do seem to be some parallels between online publishing and old-fashioned gold prospecting: there's rich pickings for anyone who ventures in the right direction. Just as the mining industry developed and there were winners and losers, so too will online publishing develop.
So how will online publishing change over the next few years, and what will be the key skills for original content publishers to ensure they develop with the market?

Pretty much the same key skills that apply to offline publishing: The ability to select topics of interest to readers and advertisers, produce or acquire editorial content that will interest your readers, and convert your circulation into revenue through advertising or other means.
Thanks for this succinct statement. I hope you are right, and that long-term survival doesn't also require the technical ability to defend one's content from the cheats.
