Stats problem or something else?

I started adding Adsense to my existing website about the middle of August. Just a few cents a day came in at first, but it kept steadily improving, until the past couple of weeks I'd been averaging around $3 a day. I know it's not much, but I thought I was off to a pretty good start! (And have even started plotting more websites.)

Yesterday morning, I discovered I'd made only 19 cents so far, on 3 clicks. This morning, it still said 3 clicks and 19 cents, with 252 page impressions! And I've made all of 5 cents this morning, with 2 clicks and 38 page impressions.

Is this just a matter of stats not updating properly? I thought they were supposed to update fully within 24 hours, but it's been more than 24 hours since yesterday morning.

My Adsense impressions were very low for yesterday while the stats from my web host showed normal activity for a Thursday.

Thursday was a strange day...one account performed extremely well, another account seemed as though it had already been hit by hurricane Rita!

The EPC was ok however the CTR was at a level I do not want to see again consequently the earnings were way down, far less than an average weekend.

The figures seem to have recovered to average levels today however saying that at this time of day my sites are usually steaming ahead...blip...blip...blip...and just when I thought that things were returning to normal(ish).

Swings, roundabouts and all that come to mind!

Adsense can be something of a roller coaster ride, especially if you are running a single site.

Honestly it's likely to take a few months before you can really get an idea of what to expect.

Just keep plugging along and pay careful attention to what works on your site (placement, colors, etc).

miki99,

Have you submitted your site to all the free web directories and especially to DMOZ?

Get as many backlinks as you can, ask for link trades or simply ask them to link to you and give them a ready made ad to pick up from your website.

Join, and actually participate and be a good citizen in forums where people are interested in what your site is about and whatever else you can think of :)

The more visits to your site, the more clicks, the more money in your pocket.

I don't think it's a coincidence that AdWords just implemented a much more robust site-blocking option for advertisers and now the stats are screwy for many of us. If you haven't heard/read yet, AdWords advertisers can now block up to 500 publisher sites, way up from the previous number. I think it's going to create a bigger gap between the AdSense winners and losers. This might be the first rumblings of that. Then again, it might be the normal roller coaster ride.

I've pretty much done or am doing most of that, Ann. Thanks very much for the suggestions. My site actually ranks fairly well for several of its keywords, but they are not really search terms that are heavily searched for. (The site showcases my fantasy artwork, so I figure one of the best things I can do is create and add more artwork! I've also recently started adding articles on fairy lore, etc.) I am now thinking about other websites I can create for my other interests that would be more popular in searches.

Swebbie, on another thread someone attributed the dips some people are experiencing on a combination of factors that keep people away from their computers, like the new TV season, plus Hurricane Rita, etc. Hope that's what it is--I'd hate to think a lot of advertisers were blocking my website for some reason.

Miki,

I expected a dip from the hurricane, but I'm seeing average revenues yesterday and today across all my sites. What I have seen is a big increase in CTR. This may have something to do with the new AdWords changes, but it might also be due to other factors. It's rarely clear-cut just what causes these fluctuations.

I think it is something completely different - Google search has implemented a new update that was phased in about 3 days ago. Many sites have taken a hit, but others have had no changes. From you posts, though, it is hard to see if you have seen a decline in page impressions, or just Adsense ad impressions (with page impressions still the same).
