Changing the Ad Unit Channels

Can I do it this way?

I've decided to use some of the extra channels available and have started replacing the broader channels with the new more specific channels.

So here I am replacing the channel numbers with the new channel numbers... then I'm thinking... oh crap, am I violating TOS by changing the code this way? Generating new codes for each and every unit I want to change(nearly every unit on my sites) would take forever, but I don't want to get banned for life for being lazy!

I've wondered that same thing myself. I don't think it will cause any problems because the resulting code would be identical to what you'd get if you did generate a whole new code.

But it might be worth asking G directly before doing it.

We went through the same thing last month.

Like most newbies when I set the ads up in March I really didn't fully comprehend the value of channels. I had three sites and I just threw in the ads and crossed my fingers. It wasn't long before I realized that I had no idea what was happening and what was making money.

Over the last two months I have added channels on all ads in 2 of the sites. The third site is about 30% finished.
I have changed each ad by hand however what I did do was review every page and make changes based on what I have learned here. Total income and CTR has shown a significant improvement.

Don't know if this addresses your specific question however a little time spent doing it the hard way may pay off for you.

I don't believe we are allowed to manually alter the code provided by AdSense. Whether this would result in a ban or not is questionable.
