It probably isn't as dependent upon the topic area, as it is on having the traffic. You could have a site in the most profitable per click area, yet not make nearly as much as someone who has a site in one of the lowest per click areas, yet has significant traffic visiting it.

If you are wanting to create a site around a perceived profitable area, you are better off creating a site about something you know (less work creating content), or a site that is related to something you currently have so you can drive the traffic to it.

You can check with both Adwords and Overture to see what kinds of terms have higher CPC - but then don't forget that AdSense may not use those top dollar keywords when targeting your pages for ads.

A highly profitable area doesn't hurt, but bottom line is that without visitors, no one will click those AdSense ads to make you money ;)

Since we can't share revenue or stats, I don't know if I am really successful or not, but here is what I have found with all advertising:

- Don't try to trick your users. Using pop-ups and in your face flashy things only gets clicks to start. Users who trust your site and come back, will click on things because they do.

- Blend Adsense into the color scheme. Again, if it looks like an ad, but is easy to read, it might get more clicks.

- Rotate in different ads with Adsense. I have Adsense running in one location but always have something else rotating in there. Adense can look like the same link over and over again if it always there.

Great idea BwanaZulia!

How do you do the rotation? Just a random server side include of the code?

Just like Jenstar said:

50 clicks at $0.10 = $5.00
1 click at $2.00 = $2.00

Some of the high value clicks are for some areas that are so niche and produce so little traffic that one of the top visited websites might only pull 200 visitors a day, with a couple of dozen visitors being webmasters looking for highly profitable websites :D

Then you got to break into these SERPS, which have been highly optimized. Got to come up with content, and even if you are succesful you have to hope that enough of the 200 visitors click on the ad. Getting an adwords account as mentioned above is a great idea.

Or you could just design a website for surfers that can be part of a class action lawsuit, have a couple of chronic health problems that can be solved with prescriptions, are looking for technical support and services, are planning to take a vacation soon and have need for highly specific financial services. Do that my friend and you are gold.

the more you guys look for the profitable niches, the more advertisers will hold back on choosing content targetted ads :)

just bear that in mind!

I actually wrote my own AdServing application... It is simple but it works. Zope only though. Sorry. :)
