just trying to offset some of my cost and not lose as much money on a pet project i have, its fun for me, so i am content in just breaking even, and using my time. anyways, just curious, i havent signed up for adsense yet, however i was wondering how it works, in that, what % of the click goes into your pocket? and what is a good % of # of views of the ads to # of clicks?

also, i know you arent allowed to intice clicks, but is there anything wrong with having an adsense ad near a donations section? i just wanna steam line stuff, and donations are huge for me, as my bandwidth usage is insane.

also i hear overture is going to/already has rolled out something like this, any news/articles i can read about this?

thanks guys.

Adsense won't tell you what the percentage is, and how much you get per click varies immensely - there isn't a set price. It depends on may factors including how much the advertisers are prepared to bid for the keyword / site and what smartpricing decides.

Smartpricing is an algorythm that tries to work out how clicks convert on websites for advertisers and offers a discount to the advertiser accordingly. For example, on your site an ad might get 100 clicks and if the feedback to Google is that a decent percentage of those clicks end up in a sale then smartpricing will up what it thinks your site is worth, and earnings per click go up. Obviously if the clicks don't convert then smartpricing zapps the price you get / advertiser pays to minimum.

and what is a good % of # of views of the ads to # of clicks

Depends on the site. On some sites publishers may be happy with less than 1% click through rate (CTR), and on others they might normally see 15% ctr. High ctr doesnt necessarily mean high earnings per click (EPC) - smartpricing might decide that the clicks don't convert and pay minimum. It all depends on your site, if you run it for a while you'll get a feel of what is normal for your site.

also, i know you arent allowed to intice clicks, but is there anything wrong with having an adsense ad near a donations section? i just wanna steam line stuff, and donations are huge for me, as my bandwidth usage is insane.

If you do have a donations button, it might be an idea to keep it separate from the ads. If visitors might get the impression you are asking them to click on the ads to support the site then you risk being thrown out of adsense. However, if there is no danger of visitors confusing the click to donate direct and the adsense block then it may be allowed. You can always ask Google to take a look at your site and check it complies.

I would say that adsense despite it's flaws (which are many and varied) pays a lot better than any other ad network. My adsense income is 40 times my Fastclick income. You just need to aquaint yourself with Google's TOS and follow this forum to get the best out of adsense.
