It seems an evil minded competitor could click on your ads nonstop for a long period of time just to get you banned on the basis of excessive invalid clicks? Is this correct?

Yes, they can do that.

However, you can always send email to Google to explain and they usually understand.

Gut instinct would say "no they can't". I'm sure google have ways and means of ignoring duplicate clicks.

I don't think they can't simply click your ads to kick you out of Adsense. Anyway, be proactive with your website to avoid bad things that may come to you.
