Are you worried about viewing your own site?

I quite often view my site 'live' but I am not thinking maybe I'll get booted for inflating impressions of adverts.

Does anyone else regularly view their own site live?

Sometimes I like to view which ads are being served to my pages.

Is there anyway around this without the risk of violating the TOS?

Why would viewing your own site be against AdSense TOS? Higher impressions will only cost you bandwidth, and I don't think Google will have problem with that.

Are you thinking maybe by doing that you'll bog down and crashed Google's Ad server? :D

>>>Why would viewing your own site be against AdSense TOS?

Due to CPM model.

I ban myself from viewing adds in the host file and rarely look at adverts.

However, I am paranoid :)

Aah, right. CPM model.

That's something very foreign to me considering I only get a little over 900 pageviews (300 uniques) daily and around 15% of those pageviews is actually me moving and changing colours of the AdSense Ads.

I point my browser to a dummy mirror of my main home page.
The mirror only lives on my hard drive. No adsense here,
I just do this to avoid skewing my visitor statistics. -Larry

Itīs an interesting question and i wondered about that...presumably google can filter out your own IP....i canīt believe they would penalise you for visiting your own site (at least i hope not)
On my main site, there are 14 million page impressions a month but bear in mind that each user opens an average of 15 pages (there is a lot of info) so being admin of the site, i regularly look at maybe 100 different pages everyday.

True forum admins and mods are more likely to view a lot more pages than the average user in a day, but presumeably Google would factor situations such as this into any fraud detection methods?

There are some really paranoid people on this forum - scary.

Google does not concern itself with impressions only invalid clicks. I use my site regularly and I know many others do because its good at what it does. I never click any adsense just view the site.

Adsense is CPM based not CPC!

Any method that artificially generates clicks or impressions is strictly prohibited. These prohibited methods include but are not limited to: repeated manual clicks or impressions, incentives to click or to generate impressions, using robots, automated click- and impression- generating clicking tools, or other deceptive software. Please note that clicking on your own ads for any reason is prohibited, to avoid potential inflation of advertiser costs.

this has been brought up about 9,999 times.

you can visit your site, and update it. obviously you would want to avoid mass-refreshing. normal browsing is fine.

i don't know why you people just don't block out your own ads if your worried about it.. how hard is that? problem solved..

Normal browsing? What's normal for a forum admin? A non-tech moderator? An over zealous forum member waiting for a response?

Given that CPM ads are a new addition and the TOS has only just been updated I don't see how this issue could have been discussed lot's of times.

In response to the oringial poster, I think that you would have to view your pages a LOT of times for it to be a) flagged or b) make an impact to your earnings.

If you are really worried about it, there is an easy fix. (Note: this will block all AdSense ads from showing on your machine, but otherwise seems to have no ill effects.)

Find your "hosts" file (probably in the windows directory, under system32/drivers/etc/ and it has no extension) and add this line:

127.0.0.1pagead2.googlesyndication.com

Save the file and reboot. All it does is redirect any requests for an Adsense ad to your own machine which obviously won't have the needed code - so it displays nothing.

I have a page with AdSense on it which is reloaded a couple of times by most visitors. This is because of the nature of the page (sorry, can't be more specific). I asked AdSense if they allowed CPM on this page and they agreed. Actually they told me they were happy to hear of this example because it would give them the possibility to learn on what type of pages CPM ads would be most benificial.

So they allow natural refreshing of pages, but not if it is done to increase CPM ad impressions / earings.

>> ASA?

ASA has already stated that it's OK and that you can view your own pages as often as you like. I'll let somebody else find the thread.

Ditto. This was answered definitively a week or two ago in this forum.

I tend to write in a small bit of script to my pages for adsense and my own tracking purposes.

Basically My url's are -

www.mysite.com/widget/article1.php?admin=1

so before the google code

if admin = 1 then

else

google ad

Although for most of you guys I guess that is not rocket science!

How about using the AdSense Preview Tool?

Actually the TOS was updated yesterday.

artificially increasing impressions, even manually is now against the TOS.

I assume this is more geared towards when someone is running an impressions campaign, but it would be nice to get a clarification.

As it stands now, you could, by the TOS, be banned for creating extra impressions.

Would be nice to get a definitive word on this. To be honest I want to see ads when I browse my own site - the preview tool just is n't the same!

There are lots of threads and comments about ad targeting. If you want to adjust the keywords in your content or use the new section targeting feature, don't you have to look at your own pages live to see the ads? There must be some compromise.

I check all my sites live quite often. It doesn't have much impact on the cpm of my high traffic sites, but it does on the low traffic ones. Even though it is, technically speaking, manually generating impressions, G has never said anything to me about it.

I'm frequently checking various pages of my site to scan for competitor's ads. Using the preview tool does help but sometimes you have to check live since I've seen more than a few competitors simply change their url's to get around the filter.

Gotta agree, due to the new TOS announcement, we need an updated ASA clarification on this. Many of us basicaly "live" on our sites and have the DON'T CLICK thing burned into our muscle memory but have yet to master the DON'T REFRESH training!

I don't give a SH!T about not viewing my own page.

That is MINE page and that is MINE site. If Google can not (or also don't give a sh!t about it) just block my IP ( or list, or ask me to provide such list ) - why should I care?

There already has been a definitive word about this from ASA, it was posted a few weeks ago.

As others have said, it was noted that it is fine to view your site as you normally would as a webmaster.

Nothing in the TOS has changed that would negate what ASA wrote a few weeks ago, the same info was in the TOS back then.

You could always email the adsense team if you really must have another answer from Google. But really, it's no big deal.

I worry about other people at my work viewing my site. I showed my site to one guy and the first thing he did was click on an ad. We're on the same network, therefore same IP address. I checked my stats and there was only one click for that channel (him) and it came up with $0.00. Obviously Google dishonoured the click.

Since that episode I've stopped my site showing ads on my home and work IP addresses, and showing an image placeholder that I saved from the AdSense ad formats page.

Does anyone use the Smarty template engine?

I wrote an AdSense function that allows you to set the different javascript variables, and show an image placeholder instead of the ad itself on specific IP addresses. The outputted javascript code is exactly the same as normal, so it's not against the TOS.
