AdSense pop-unders allowed at all?

Or can you have some as long as they don't 'interfere'?

Basically Google Adsense said that they could not accept sites that contained pop-ups/unders that interfere with site navigation. The number of pop-ups Google allows varies depending on each site. In general Google doesn't recommend having more than one or two pop-ups.

So can we have one or two pop-unders or none? I'm confused, because my reading of the Terms and Conditions is no pop-unders are allowed at all...

I have had this same query with them and I am awaiting a reply.

They wrote back saying that 1 was okay. I then wrote to them saying that the TOS did not reflect that. I have heard nothing since.

I queried the AdSense team on this issue, and received the reply today. Basically, they said a single popunder is no reason to worry, but sites with excessive popups or popunders are unacceptable.

They also said that if excessive popupds or popunders were found on a site, that site would be given a warning and ample time to comply.

Their biggest beef appeared to be ads that interfered with site navigation.

Thanks for the follow up Kimkia. I think a lot of the concern was whether or not it was a "suspendable" offence or one where a warning would be given first, with time to correct it.

I wonder if they mean the slide-in rich media style of ads which obscure the site and seem to hide the close X anywhere but the top right corner ;)

Perhaps when they redid the site policies the term "multiple pop-unders" was open to too much interpretation of how many "multiple" was, which could be why the policies has this part worded as it does.

No Pop-ups

We do not allow links to landing pages that generate pop-ups when users enter or leave your landing page. We consider a pop-up to be any window, regardless of content, that opens in addition to the original window.

ANY WINDOWS THAT OPENS IN ADDITION. Pretty clear.

This topic is about popunders, not popups, but...

This sounds like an AdWords, not AdSense, rule. Where did you obtain that language?

G says "any windows", so pop-unders probably qualify.

Yes - I found it on an adwords-page.

How about opening a new browser window with target=_blank? I do with with all external links on my site, but there are a lot of them.

Yes - I found it on an adwords-page.

Then it's not relevant to this discussion or AdSense at all.

How about opening a new browser window with target=_blank?

If you are referring to AdSense links, it's not allowed.

Nope, not adsense links, just other external links on the same page.

Of course you can have external links from your site appearing in new window. Nothing in Adsense terms against that.

Google might be king, but they are not God.

Only issue = confusion over whether the occaisional pop-up/under is permitted. T&C say none at all, but in replies to me and several other people they have said that non-obtrusive occaisional pop-ups/unders are allowed.
