Page Views Doubled. Not sure why?

At the beginning of this week, my impressions began to double (twice the steady average from the last several weeks). I figured that I was getting some visitor and/or page view spikes from organic search or forum links, but my traffic numbers are very steady.

Any thoughts on why my impressions would suddenly jump while everything else appears to remain static? FYI, I did not add any new Adsense ads to my site. The only thing I did was change some ad colors...but I would think that would affect CTR, not impressions.

This happened to several months ago when my impressions were high and then suddenly cut in half (again, no traffic peaks/valleys). Thanks.

I'm certainly no expert, but one possibility is that you may
normally get many vistors with ad blocking and now you're getting a wave of visitors who don't have ad blocking turned on.

I had a similar experience this week on August 13th - my impressions went up 600% that day, then dropped to double the normal impressions the next day. After that, back to the normal numbers.

I checked my server log files and what I did see was this Chinese search spider called Gaisbot hitting me heavily those days. I didn't think that spider activity would show as page impressions, though....

I noticed the same thing starting abruptly on Aug 12. It's very obvious on my repotr when you display the aggregates for the full month. Impression counts on the "show data by page" report went up 50% and clicks stayed the same so CTR and CPM went down proportionately. However, impressions, clicks and CTR on the "show data by individual ads" page stayed exactly the same (as in: "within their usual daily standard deviations"). So either I removed multiple ads from half my pages (which I didn't) or G started tracking things differently or has a reporting bug.

It could also have something to do with ad-links tracking as we added a bunch of them near the beginning of the month and many weren't working fully until recently. Anyone know for sure how those things are calculated on the page vs individual ad units reports. e.g. if someone clicks on an ad link, and then on an ad, and then returns to the primary Google results page (ad link listing) does that constitute another impression on OUR page? What if they then return to our original page?
I think they should track adlinks separately like they do search results, to avoid confusion.
