"So far this year over 10 million versions of Opera have been downloaded from www.opera.com. "

Opera now has adsense built into the browser, its hard to tell when a Opera visitor visits your site, because the new versions useragent are being reported as MSIE.

I wonder how many users will now get reports of double serving etc? IE when someone visits my site adsense is displayed in opera header, and then adsense is displayed in my page.

I wouldn't have thought that there would be a problem a the Opera Adsense ads will have a different account number from those served on your page.

Also Google will be very well aware that Opera are serving their ads.

Google will not accuse you of double serving if they cannot confirm that you are double serving. Further, there will be two different publisher codes.

I certainly don't like the fact that someone's browser is diluting the effect of my AdSense ads, but it's not something to be concerned about as to violating any rules on your end.

I haven't downloaded the new version because of the rumbling concerning these ads, is there no way to 'turn off' them off?

You can select generic graphical banner ads instead of contextual banner ads, yes...

And, what they much prefer, you can pay and have no ads at all!

Blue_Fin is correct, you don't have to worry about being reported for double serving. AdSense is fully aware of what Opera is doing, and Opera is a Premium publisher. If Google didn't like it, those ads would be showing PSAs instead of targeted ads.

If Opera was overwriting the ads that displayed on the actual webpages themselves, so that Opera was getting payment for any clicks on the actual pages, that would be considered scumware. But Opera just displays the 468x60 banner near the very top on the right. Because of where those ads are displayed in the Opera browser, I suspect it only takes a day or two before those ads might as well be invisible - users just become blind to them after a time.
