Anyone else see a surge in eCPM and earnings after Aug 4?

I don't know exactly what Google did on Aug 4, but I'm not seeing any difference in the ad layouts on my site whatsoever.

However, earnings are up about 30% and it started exactly on August 4th. There is nothing obvious that could account for the increase except higher ad prices as all the stats are average except eCPM and earnings increasing. We're only talking a few cents per ad spread over thousands of clicks, nothing earth shattering, but cumulatively significant.

Maybe it's a coincidence, maybe not, but it's been a rocket ride all week.

Absolutely right!

Since August 4th I'd say my CPM has gone up by almost 50% average daily.

opposite here :( i guess there must be an option for publishers to choose how many advertisers to display :(

Anyways, lets see how it goes.

This month started out fairly well, but fell flat on its face yesterday. Yesterday was the worst day I've seen in many months.

Today, stats are looking stuck. I've seen no updates in a few hours so I don't know what to expect when all the results finally come in.

My eCPM trippled on the 5th and has held more or less steady after that. Of course it may have less to do with optimization than advertising dollars hitting certain types of sites.

The fourth was my second best day ever. - I have noticed a small increase in eCPM since, but I do not see any difference in ad layout.

It all started on Aug. 2 for me. It's been up there since then. July wasn't bad for me either.

I can't believe it... for the first time one of these posts seems to be accurate.

I am also reflecting a higher eCMP + Earnings since the 4th.

Was it the 4th when they introduced the ideal ad units on the fly?

Are you guys sure this isn't just due to "new ad inventory" at the beginning of the month.

Post back on this if it holds true for the duration of the month. I tend to get better ads served towards the beginning of the month, then once their budgets are up - the crappy ads come rolling in full force.

Please give at least some kind of an indication of your daily page impressions (or earnings or clicks) in these kinds of threads! Also, why has eCPM changed? Because of CTR or CPC? Of course, if your traffic sources or levels have significantly changed, then please indicate so. Across how many sites? Smaller, very focused sites can see significant jumps in earnings due to so many factors, that it must be near impossible to know if the difference is because of actual AdSense program changes.

For my sites, I'm not seeing significant differences in eCPM, CTR, or CPC since Aug. 4. I have several sites in varied industries with total daily clicks in 5-digits.

Could be, but I've never seen a sudden jump like this that wasn't associated with something like more traffic from the SEs. The money has been particularly high this week, every day is setting new record highs.

Don't know what the difference is, but I'll take it while it lasts!

I can't say whether it is directly related because I made other major changes on August 1st... LOL

But... I JUST saw the LARGE PRINT single ad in one of my 728 ad blocks.

Now... finally... I think they've got it! The ad doesn't get lost now. And for those who are wondering, it isn't the CPM ad. It is completely different... it doesn't fill the ad space like the CPM ads. This one is the single ad but left justified with large print for title, otherwise similar to a normal layout.

Hi incrediBILL –

This thread might explain why you've noticed a surge in revenue since August 4th:

Glad to hear the new targeting is working well!

ASA,

Yesterday those optimizations actually hit my site for the 1st time that I've seen and my CTR fell faster than frozen dung from a leaky airliner. Lowest CTR I've seen in 5 months.

I don't see them on my site today and the CTR is back to normal.

Any way to opt out of this nonsense before it "optimizes" my leaderboards again?

My eCPM has been above average for some days since August 4 and below average on others.

Average eCPM for the month to date is about 2.5% below July's (which isn't bad, since many of my readers are on vacation this month).

I think the changes that ASA referenced are probably good for AdSense and publishers. (Varying the size and number of ads in the "Ads by Google" block seems like a nice tactic for preventing ad blindness.)

That's an opinion I don't share.

As long as my leaderboards seemed to remain as-is (pre Aug 4) I was getting 8%-10% CTR and the minute the new leaderboards showed up yesterday it dropped to 6%. Those new leaderboards don't seem to be showing today and my CTR is back to normal.

Coincidence?

I don't think so.

it's probably safe to say that we can't see every single adsense ad that's served up on our websites... so it's going to be difficult for us common folk to draw any meaningful conclusions based on the ad format... only google knows that info.

today and yesterday have been the worst days of the month for me as well, but the ctr is still up over last month by a small amount... if this slightly increased ctr trend continues over the next few weeks, whatever is happening gets my vote :-)

although it'll be rather meaningless, of course, if the ecpm isn't there to back it up! like bill, i'm seeing better page ecpm this month, versus last month.
