Placement of Ads

I've just added adsense to my site.

Now I am wondering about ad placement.

Would it be better to have a generic front page/category page with ads in set positions and then custom ad placement on article pages

Or sitewide generic placement?

Hope that makes sense.

I think you should test it out and see which one does better, that's the only way your going to know for sure.

As mentioned already, testing on your own site is the only way to know for sure.

That said, placing ads in different locatins on different pages might help avoid banner or ad blindness.

Here is a link to an Optimzation Tips page on Google that includes a Heat Map [google.com].

The Heat Map, in particular, might give you some guidance on what ad locations to test.

I must admit that though I like the idea of a uniform style for a site, I've found that varying the type and placement of ad blocks is what works best for me. I have a feeling that as people navigate through the site, ad blindness takes place if the ads are a) on all pages, and b) in the same position each time.

By experimenting with various banners and styles you will soon find patterns, and what works best. I would advise that you use a channel on all banners to enable you to work out what works and what doesn't.

I have three basic layouts throughout the entire site, and the handfull of pages with adsense on will have whatever has proven to work best on that page. I also periodically try new layouts. I've recently added an adlinks banner again to one of my pages. Last time I tried adlinks it was a dismal failure, but this time around one banner now accounts for approx 10% of my daily earnings.
