My First Scraper(that I've noticed)

Registered a mis-spelling of my domain

Someone had the nerve to register a mis-spelling of my domain name, copy much of my content, then contact me for a reciprocal link.

Whoever wants to say, "I told you so"... go ahead...

Did they emulate your content, or copy it word for word. To me, both methods are theft. But, if it's word for word, I think you'll have an easier time complaining to their hosting service and/or domain registrar.

Also, was the link solicitation one of those generic "send to a million sites" types of letters? How did you discover it?

Is the guy running adsense?

Is there no end to the scum pond life that exist out there on the WWW?

Have you checked whois [whois.net] for a contact number. I would personally ring them and embarrass the hell out of the owner by asking why he/she feels they need to steal your content, buy a miss spelling of your domain and the audacity to ask for a link. We know why they do it but maybe a call would make the owner feel really embarrassed and pull the site down.

Geez have these guys got any thing up top? Maybe these scraper scum have scraped everything out of their heads thats decent and respectable.

Good Luck ;-)

Yes, they are running Adsense.

It looked like form mail(link exchange request), probably sent out to thousands(or millions). I found it looking through an old email addy of mine. I already know that email addy has been sold several times over, that's why I had to change it.
Spam galore.

They copied my font and old intro sentence(I recently changed it). Then they copied my category link titles and used some sort of program to generate similiar sub-topics for each...

You can tell the site is "generated", so I'm thinking it will just go away on it's own.

So far, when I checked Google, they have no inbound links. I'm thinking that I'll just watch them and see if any IB's appear. If so, I'll then take the time to report. I've saved a copy of their current site for my records.

Lacey, I wouldn't wait. Each time I've had to deal with this issue (contacting a hosting service, calling a site operator on the phone, sending an email), the other parties seemed a little stunned, or at least surprised, that they had been rooted out. And each time I've wondered to myself "if I hadn't confronted them, would they have simply stolen more?"

Have you determined what country they are from or done a whois to see who their registar or hosting service is?

Yes, after reading back through everyone's posts, and deciding to take action, I know exactly who they are. I have the complete mailing address, phone number... everything.

US company. Illinois. A marketing company. They have the same web host I use, can you believe the nerve? I'll email my host and they should take care of it. Thanks for the advice.

Hey, I just got up some nerve myself and called them on the phone. Some guy answered, sounded like I just woke him up. I told him he has 24 hours before I contact a lawyer and take it any further. I told him I was about to do so, but decided to give him a chance first, just to "be nice".

He says, "oh, you have suchandsuch.com" and I said, "yes, THE suchandsuch.com." Then I gave him a quick list of everything he copied(basically the entire site) that was an infringement and told him he had 24 hours to remove the site. "Thank you for your time, good bye."

I'll let you know what happens.

"oh, you have suchandsuch.com" and I said, "yes, THE suchandsuch.com."

ROFLMAO - people are SOOOOO stupid.

It was like the nutjob that copied my site, not the content actually, the business model and all my support pages like "about us", "advertise with us" and those sorts of pages. He was cloning my site into a bunch of other markets and even using my custom made icons and graphics on his pages.

Here's the kicker - he had ADVERTISED directly on my site before. Not only did he like what he got advertising, he musta seen GOLD om them web pages of mine and started a chain of his own.

All those sites are gone, kaput, defunct, dead.

Hope you get the same results.

I've had that happen a couple of times. Makes my blood pressure rise every time I see it happen.

Glad you were able to get the offenders shut down (since they weren't smart enough to at least change the graphics/text).

It seems there is no recourse for someone just blatently stealing the business model.

Thanks everybody.

When checking to see if they were gone yet(wishful thinking), I noticed they also used one of my cgi scripts. Yeah, they copied the entire infrastructure, along with verbatim text.

I'm tempted to go ahead and contact my/their host even though I said 24 hours. They just registered the site about 3 weeks ago. Mine's been online since the late 90's. I don't think I'll have a problem getting them removed.

Again, thanks all for the advice. I just spent some bucks buying other mis-spellings my domain.

Someone did the same to us, but they used hyphens in the unique domain name. It was a definite "made for adsense" spam site. It was ranking ahead of us, but I can't find it now, they must be in the sandbox. :)

When we see stuff like this happen to our site, the hubby keeps his cool, like he shrugs if off. Me? I get mad and think "What nerve!"

this just happened to me... an entire site, just with a new name. they replaced the copyright notices at the bottom of each page, with THEIR name. not only did they steal the content, they are asserting copyright!

i am interested to hear the result of the steps that you are taking.

Okay... please can someone here tell me how you find the ISP of the person who copied from my site...

I have been able to find their email and did let them know to take down the pages... however, as they in Holland (although the copied pages are in English) I have not heard back...

Every so often I do a google search under my name in "" (because as the author I also include my by-line on every article I write) and every time I find so many of my articles and images blatantly copied.

My last google search yielded 25 of my articles copied and 5 pages.... grrrrrrrr

Help how do I find these theives ISP... thanks

Okay, maybe giving them a list of everything they were violating was not a good idea. Instead of taking down the site, they just changed it.

They changed their logo and actual title of the site so it didn't match mine, and re-worded the verbatim text.

Well, that's good enough I guess. I'll be watching them and their cheesy replica. At least now people won't be confused about where they are visiting if they happen across the site by mistake.

Sailor, you might be right.

ElvisFan, you already checked the whois and couldn't find any info? I'm not sure how to find actual ISP, but I'm sure there is a way.

I am gradually adding a meta tag to my pages with copyright data in it. Won't help to stop them but when push comes to shove maybe google bot can read the difference and see which site deserves to stay and which needs booting.
<META NAME="COPYRIGHT" CONTENT="Copyright © 1998 (domain name here) all rights reserved">

Hi Ann: That's interesting, something new.
I doubt it will deter a scraper much, but some of them aren't too brilliant.
They might copy that too, along with the rest of your code.
Wouldn't that be a hoot? - Larry

Elvisfan - everyone in Holland speaks English so they will understand any cease and desist notices no problem. So will their hosts.

Spaceylacey - totally unbelievable!

Hmm.. seems like everyone is after the Adsense money. Makes me feel like taking Adsense off since I don't make much with it.

It probably has lost its novelty and it makes me feel ashamed to be associated with those scrapers that they are supporting now + when they start showing ads that were way off what my site is about (Make me feel like it is telling my visitor a joke about my site).

Please can someone address my initial question. How do I find the ISP for a certain website that has copied my whole site...

I emailed the owner with a please delete however... no answer.

I'm angry... and would like to email their ISP and notify them of the copyright infringement...

thanks,

Try netcraft.com. That will pretty much tell you where the site is hosted.
