Clicking it led me to a moneymaking site with AdSense adverts, well blended with content. The site had nice content too.
Now, I guess this user may be using some automated BOT system for sending a message to everyone.
Is this valid? What do you all think? Is there any conflict with AdSense TOS anywhere?
You can obviously put your site's URL in an email, but I guarantee you that sending millions of spam emails will get you kicked out of the program. Does anybody really think Google would stand for that?
Same with IM: If someone asks for your homepage, then you can obviously message it to them. But if Google determines that you are sending mass unsolicited IM's then they will can you.
Do you really want your site associated with spam?
If you email someone and leav your url in a sig, that's normal. It's business.
In an IM, I'd think it was the ultimate in tackiness and would never click.
If the url is sent out via IM en masse` it's spam.

If that's the case, you can either (a) give it a try and let us know how long it takes you to lose your Internet access, your web host and your AdSense account, or (b) write Google and ask them directly.
If you want morals, then be like Mother Teresa, become a nun and devote your life to helping others. SENDING IM MESSAGES TO MAKE MONEY IS NOT IMMORAL! How is it different than any other advertising, such as mail to your door, or a tv commercial? Sure they are annoying, but get real it is not immoral. Are you gonna tell me all telemarketers are immoral because they call your house when you are eating dinner? GET A LIFE! People are just trying to survive (especially third world country publishers) and make a living, just like you.
Leave morality to issues like abortion and pre-marital sex. Online advertising , be it by emails or IM's, is not immoral just because it is the most cost effective method(you are not hurting anyone, no different than other forms of advertising).
One IM once a day is an irritant. Having to delete twenty junk IMs every ten minutes could bring a small business to a standstill.
People are just trying to survive
This is an argument which justifies the employment of contract killers and crack dealers.
There is a fundamental difference between advertising which accompanies a service (TV advertising, Radio advertising, AdSense on websites etc.) and advertising which intrudes on whatever else you were doing (door-to-door sales, unsolicited phone calls, text messages, emails or IM).
why do you specifically need an answer so badly? Is it because you thought this IM spam thing was a pretty neat idea and you want to try it for yourself?
lol. Nah ... my main site is about food. Nobody on chat is interested in food. lol .

Coming to the another point. With Google soon launching the CPM model, such spam would really be harmful in long run. On daily basis, millions of fake impressions can be generated, just by showing the page with adsense... what do you think?
I hate how people bring morals in a question about IM MESSAGING.
Then don't read it.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't about sending a single IM, the question was about SPAMMING so whether it's IM, EMAIL, or whatever the spammers definitely are in violation of AdSense TOS.
You either do things the right way with AdSense or you don't! It's getting tedious how daily people are looking for new ways to scam the system doing questionable things just because the AdSense TOS doesn't define something.
There was a thread the other day about putting AdSense in your signature on a forum, I mean come on....
SENDING IM MESSAGES TO MAKE MONEY IS NOT IMMORAL!
Do you even know what immoral is?
The simple definitions are:
Contrary to established moral principles, violating principles of right and wrong
Harassing innocent people using Yahoo IM is wrong wouldn't you say?
It's violating peoples rights to use the internet with being hassled and harassed by morons and idiots. People have the right to use an email account, instant messaging and <gasp> even a telephone with being bombarded by every little weasel trying to make a quick buck annoying the hell out of people.
Harrassing people is just wrong, call it whatever you like that let's you sleep at night, I'll call it immoral.
I see that in coming times, this would be a bigger threat than email spam itself.
What surprises me is the silence of google in TOS about this.
Does it consider a non-existant? or it thinks its ok?
Nonetheless there is no need to keep asking whether Google disapproves of spam. There absolutely is no question it is a violation of the agreement and that you could get banned for it.
I suppose they feel it goes without saying, but at the very least it would be covered in section 5 of the TOS document, where it states that you may not... "engage in any action or practice that reflects poorly on Google or otherwise disparages or devalues Google’s reputation or goodwill."
There seems to be more and more cheapskate advertisers out there. If only we publishers had a way to filter out the cheapies and their bloody 3 cent clicks, then people wouldnt get wild ideas.
In the real estate market, when there's a big supply and no demand, prices drop. It's no different with web real estate.
K
The 3 cent clicks are a result, in part at least, of the junk sites out there
Indeed, about time google finally realizes this and kicks the scrapers. And while I make a nice buck on Adsense I sure won't advertise on content until general quality of the publishers is increased.
It is such a shame.. when Adsense just started it was a sign of quality if I saw Adsense ads on a site. Now I associate it with scraper and spam sites.
If this continues I will get rid of Adsense on my sites.
