AdSense has introduced a new AdLinks format that displays the adlinks in a horizontal row versus the traditional vertical layout.

There are 4 new options for horizontal adlinks consisting of 5 or 4 AdLinks for 468x15 or 728x15. You may view examples at the bottom of their Ad Format page located at [google.com...]

I have one site where AdSense can't find the right ads. I have used the square adlinks block with some success on that site.

Since AdSense introduced the horizontal format I replaced the square adlinks block with an ordinary ads block and put a horizontal AdLinks block at the top of the content. According to the channel statistics results are promising, probably because the top of the content is a natural place where people look for navigating the site.

Number of impressions and CTR are low on this site, so it is too early for definite conclusions, but so far I am happy with the new adlinks format.

I, too, have put a horizontal AdLinks block at the top of the page content, where it sort of looks like a site navigation bar. This has more than doubled my (traditionally abysmally low) CTR on one site (and compensated for my total loss of Google traffic on another site--Bourbon update?). For me, on this one site, horizontal AdLinks are a minor miracle.
