I keep an eye on my competitors but something caught my eye tonight that almost make me spit my drink on the screen. AdSense on his home page was hawking discount calls to Bulgaria and Buy Bulgaria on eBay! Considering the word Bulgaria doesn't show anywhere on the page I'm baffled.

Not that I'm terribly concerned about his site, I was more in a panic as why Google would do such a thing between my laughing and snickering. The rest of his site seems to still be on target, so I run to my site which seemed to be on target.

It's 12 hours later and he's still peddling Bulgaria, funniest thing I've ever seen but how in the heck would something like this happen in the first place?

Not that I care for him, I just wouldn't want to be selling Bulgaria on my site :)

Hi Incred: Did you have a look at his source code?
Maybe there are some odd keywords tucked here and there including country names,
contents of phone books, that sort of thing. -Larry

Just curious when you say competitor does he sell related items or is it another adsense publisher in your same nich space?

Thanks
John

Trust me when I say Bulgaria shows up no where on the page, I always VIEW SOURCE then scan. Now I'm also seeing ads in other languages too, it would be hysterical if I didn't think it could happen to me too.

The only thing new I noticed was he just installed AdBrite on his site, maybe he's being punished.

Just curious when you say competitor does he sell related items or is it another adsense publisher in your same nich space?

I sell a few things but I don't think he sells anything, he's mostly chasing after my ad revenue in terms of direct advertisers and AdSense. Constantly nipping at my heels but so far I'm still winning.

I actually think he's trying to help me as I once thought I was the ultimate ad whore with my site but he's totally prostituted his once nicer looking site. If ads were itchy bumps he'd have the measles.

Ads are totally off for me tonight, and i'm using the google keyword command to force ads! Not the actual example but something similiar, i'm forcing the ads to show credit card and i'm seeing ads for "erotic trips to some island"

Makes 0 sense.

Maybe it’s just some delay with the AdSense bot. He could have changed his content recently and the AdSense bot is late in reindexing the page.

The site you're looking at probably catches a lot of traffic from that neck of the woods - hence the ads. That's the bottom line.

It's supposed to geo-target and I'm sure not interested in Bulgarian phone rates

Not really - the page is pretty stagnant except for the ever expanding proliferation of affiliate links.

A website about Bulgaria is probably linking to him, and thus causing that ad targeting. Websites linking in can have an effect on the targeting, in my opinion.

On Thursday we were getting some really strange unconnected ads showing up on our pages. As a result our CTR was down 30% and also our earnings.

Things seem to be returning to normal. It looks to me like AdSense cycles through my sites every 5 or 6 days trying new ads.

I wish they would use some system which tells them which ads people are clicking on and just leave them there.

I have a site which is purely about London...yet has been showing ads for San Francisco for the past few days. I am baffled by it. It was perfectly fine before that - and there is nothing new that may of tripped the adsense bot.

Adsense targetting can be very stange at times!

Mike, Where do we get such page counters. I'm interested.

On the targetting topic I'm glad to announce that my page on organizing the home and getting rid of clutter is no longer showing ads for truck and van parts. I could not find anything on the page that would be in any way related to such ads. I almost took adsense off that page but I'm glad I waited because it's on target now.

I can think of worse mix-ups than London and San Francisco.

Are there ways you can work this to your advantage?
I love both cities. I used to work as a musician in SF.

I there no opportunity here? (there) -Larry

I think I finally figured out what's going on with his site as today besides hawking Bulgaria it's putting up off topic ads about guided tours in Croatia, Estonia, Ecuador - Google suddenly thinks it's about TRAVEL but the word only exists 3 times on the page and not in any crucual areas.

They have suddenly become EFV's competitor :)

I have noticed that too, effect of IBLs. I think Adsense system is always trying newer things both at website level and algo level. One thing is for sure the function to maximize is Google's profit.

anyway, my CTR has dropped by %50, and i checked couple of pages and Adsense is wayyy off.

Today took a turn for the more hysterical - his site is gone altogether.

Some web hosting message displays, no web site.

Hope this keeps up.

Yeah I think the targetting is off. My CTR today has almost halved due to some weird ads showing up.
