I think there is no doubt adsense has no real competitor. There will not be one until a fully automated online brokerage between publishers and advertisers is done on a large scale. Will be many years for this.

Will be many years for this

In this day and age of constant mergers why do you say that?

The market is new with providing text-based ads which are placed based on content & geo targeting, on such a wide-spread scale. And it has been successful with plenty of publishers signing up. And with all successful businesses, it doesn't take long for a competitor to come along with a competing product.

There is no doubt in my mind that AdSense will have a competitor shortly. And I can guarantee you that it won't be years away.

The key to a successful competitor to Adsense will just be someone who has a lot of advertisers on board. I suspect the only reasonable solution for that in the medium term is going to be Overture.

And they'd be crazy not to jump into the game, considering they don't have any where near the volume of search results that Google can generate.

I don't know. No one has really done jack for small niche content providers in the past. Why should they "see the light" now. The fact that there is no competition today, when someone else should have beaten G to the punch tells me it will be years.

For some reason it just really kills these companies to write a decent check for the ad inventory on niche sites. I'm not holding my breath.

"They would be crazy to not jump in."

Mostly I think they have fully demonstrated that they are in fact, yes, crazy.

Why should they "see the light" now

Because money talks. They paid what they determined the market would accept. They called it right. The market accepted it. Till Adsense. The market moved over. They'll have to adapt and pay more.

But kudos to Google for the gaining the first mover advantage in such style and with such big cheques.
