Same page, different Adsense code

Can you provide different Adsense code?

I know you can't change Adsense JavaScript, but can you provide different JS for the same URL, for example by PHP and includes? For example, I might want to use PHP to select ad size, ad color or number based upon how many pages they've viewed, where they came from or user status. Does this violate the TOS against changing their code?

I believe there is a thread from a couple of months back, where a webmaster reported Google's approval of their script which changed the ad size based upon a viewer's screen settings. From that, one could reasonably infer that Google doesn't care how you select the code which displays on the page, as long as the code itself is unaltered.

However, Google has in the past cautioned that if you save the AdSense code in a file separate from the page, it may throw off the matching algorithm leading to suboptimal ad placement. (That is, Google will try to match the ads to the file containing the AdSense code.)

Interesting. I’ve never heard that before. I have my AdSense code in an include file and my ads seem to be on target and always have. I’ve been in the AdSense program since the beginning.
