Basically if I was to use adsense but not have money making as my sole intention, is it possible to earn loads?
Or do I need to hire content writers, write on topics i know nothing about, open 9 more sites, scrape content and so on .. all of which destroy the authenticity of the internet in my opinion.
The ONLY way to play it is to stick to the rules, and the advice about having a quality site that vistors want to browse is absolutely key.
I can't help but think the only way to earn high would be to have one of those 'sponsored links' domains where there is no content but just links and so on.
You are right to steer away from this method. Firstly, Google might view this type of site as "Made for adsense", and there is a risk of being booted. Secondly, with the new features advertisers have it's possible that they will not put their ads on that type of site (unless they get sales that way). Thirdly, it's possible that these link pages are the ones that have low epc anyway.
Quality content, and a well visited site is the best way forward IMHO.
You have more faith in the longevity of things on the web than I have.Whatever you do with your sites, I wouold very much doubt that AdSense in its present form will be around in 10 years, let alone 30 years ;)
As a beliver in reincarantion, I will try to pass all my domains to my next reincarnation.
There are several areas I am thinking about making a site about, but I probably won't because 1) they won't get the traffic and/or 2) the visitors wouldn't be interested in buying anything that pays well.
I, also, want to add to the internet experience. I want to contribute. The last couple of sites I made do that, but they're not going to make me much. One site has the chords to a bunch of old-time fiddle tunes. It is the only site that has this info, so the pages are right at the top of the SERPs. I feel good about the contribution. The demographic may buy but the site only gets about 150 visitors/day.
I have another wonderful site that I finished about a month ago. It provides information that the visitor is looking for, it's very useful, and its the only site on the whole web that has it. It took me about 5 months to make and has over 9000 pages. It's been spidered and the pages come right to the top. The demographic will buy and I'm pretty sure the ads will sell. But it only got 25 visitors yesterday. Traffic may pick up, so it may have a chance. I figure I need at least 500 visitors/day to get any ROI in my time.
The site I'm working on now is crap. Nothing original. I can throw it together in a week. I can put one text ad at the top of the page and chances are it will make more money than the other two sites I mentioned.
I'm still waiting for the idea of a great site that is also a moneymaker. And also a site I'd enjoy doing; but that's another subject.
For me, simply moving the ads, reduce ads to one per page, and blend them caused a 3x increase in $/visitor.
If you can get up to 50 cents per visitor then you'll be setup to be able to drive traffic via Adwords. Adwords visitors will get you a higher CTR.
