Because it's cheaper?
Even considering that some countries are more expensive than others, there is no way that the average cost of express is thirty bucks. More like fifteen, I'd say.
That said, $30 for a secure delivery is nuts. I overnight BOOKS from Amazon for less than that.
Now Google Adsense support is telling me that DHL does not provide a tracking number for their shipments.
I wouldn't say adsense support is lying, maybe they're mistaken or couldn't figure out how to find out what your tracking number is.
I requested my tracking number on Wednesday, and received it Thursday evening.
I guess I know my check is on it's way, sort of, but what the tracking is telling me is that my check has been sitting in DHL's London facility since yesterday.
DHL has a tracking number for everything. You don't think a company that provides express service could stay in business if it didn't, do you?
How about we all file feature requests with AdSense support to - politely - request that our tracking numbers just be automatically be placed on our payment history report? You can bet that Google has each check's tracking number in a database somewhere. It would not be rocket science to just stick it on our reports, and it would save them about a bazillion support queries from people wanting to know where their checks are.
I already filed such a request, but I think they need to hear it from more people.
Google tells me they are not trackable. Time to revert to regular mail I guess.
So I guess it will be here Monday: likely the same day it would have been here had I selected snail mail, in which case I would have been thirty bucks richer.
Well I guess I'm better off being able to track my check. I guess I'm fortunate they were willing to give me my tracking number, unlike some of you.
My last cheque came from Finland. Somebody in Finland's came from the US. People in the US are getting them from Ireland, Canada from the UK.
Utter madness. Anyone any idea why they can't dispatch cheques from the nearest office?

- payments needlessly crisscrossing the globe are the result of a mistake
Or course both are possible, but I wonder if this might be a corporate strategy to re-allocate profit/loss to/from its various global divisions. So far the reports seem to be pretty isolated, so who knows..
It's a bit amusing to read the blow by blow up to the minute updates on Michael Crawford's check delivery.
It gets even better. My bank is in the US, so I have to FedEx my check there at a cost of $35 Canadian. That's part of why I didn't go with EFT, as I was unable to get a local business account in time and Google won't allow us to EFT to US banks. All of my clients until very recently have been in the US, so I just used a US bank to avoid clearing delays and such.
But then because my bank in the US won't accept a faxed wire order, I pay myself by withdrawing it at the ATM here in Canadian dollars. I go to the bank every day and withdraw the maximum, whatever I can get in Canadian that won't exceed three hundred US dollars.
I just got back from the Post Office where I dropped off my tax return - tax day is today in Canada! I was up all night doing my taxes. And do you know why? Because I was up all night, night before last, posting on webmasterworld when I should have been doing my taxes!
Some folks at Kuro5hin said I was laundering money because I take my pay out at the ATM. But I'll have you know that one reason it took me so long to prepare my return is that I had to make this giant spreadsheet with every ATM transaction I made in 2004, in both the US dollars that were withdrawn and the Canadian dollars I received. Every penny was declared! Within a month I'll be a landed immigrant here, and the last thing I want is to get deported because I didn't declared an ATM withdrawal. (I'm a US citizen, but I married a Canadian woman.)
I checked my tracking, and there is no news. I guess it is in the air.
Michael no offense intended, I'm sure you're a great guy and will have great success with AdSense and will be an asset to WebmasterWorld. And you sound so earnest I know you'll make a great fellow Canadian. But nobody cares where your check is at any given moment except you.
