Does it pay?

Has anyone experienced more revenue by adding the search facility or a decrease in revenue by adding it?

No gain no loses.
Just waste of valuable space of your website

From the perspective of our type of site, it's good. It either leads people to click on an ad within their search ( they seem to be searching for words that pay equal to or greater than our other adsense page ads) or it directs them to another page on our site that has adsense listed. We can count on and extra 10% income from it. But like I said, it depends on your specific situation.

I found it to be ineffective, and get better results with the open source ht://dig with a results page which matches my site and includes a much more subtle ad.

I saw something on a site recently, where instead of having a search box they instead linked directly to the custom search results page. But I don't see anything in the guidelines which would permit that type of direct linking, so I wouldn't personally engage in it without express approval from Google.

I see the search facility as an exit door but hoped that someone would see tangible results from using it.

Generally it earns a few cents a day. But, since you can't control what a visitor might search for, it can have some very nice days. Visitors will search for just about anything under the sun, not just those things that fit into your site's subject matter.

I'd like them to click a couple of adsense links before they choose to search elsewhere.

I suppose if they went down that route, we'd all earn money.
