I'm not sure I can give my specific example without seeming to be self-promoting. But basically the way this happens is that I have a couple articles that argue that such-and-such a thing is bad, you should have nothing to do with it, and I say it repeatedly, and so google serves ads that say "click here to get such-and-such a thing".
A hypothetical example, which I don't think would be too hard to construct it real life, might be an essay arguing that one should be a vegetarian, because eating meat is immoral. Google might well serve ads for steakhouses to such an essay, because works like "beef" and "meat" occur frequently in it.
It's not too hard to see how this problem could easily arise, but it's not at all obvious to figure out how google could solve it. Google's software would need to understand the MEANING of the text, and not just parse character strings, in order to do much better.
In some cases I've removed the adsense from some of these articles, but I'm going to leave it in at least one of them to serve as an example. If anyone from google, or anyone else for that matter, wants to see a specific example, contact me privately and I'll give you a link.

It recommends affiliate programs. I have been trying Amazon and Powell's City of Books (http://www.powells.com/) affiliate programs. I haven't had many sales though, and I don't think I get any money from repeat sales, only when they have followed one of my links.
That is, if I send someone to powells and they buy something, I earn money, but if that same person then enters www.powells.com directly into their browser and buys something, I don't get paid. Are there other affiliate programs where I would?
I'm very concerned about building equity in my website.

AdSense isn't useless at all. It can work very well for advertisers, publishers, and users. For example, if I've got an article on Elbonian river cruises, AdSense can display travel agents' ads on that topic, and users who are interested in Elbonian river cruises can book voyages or find discounts by clicking on the ads. Similarly, if a site about widget manufacturing has an article about engineered plastic compounds for widget makers, AdSense can display ads for engineered plastic compounds that are likely to be seen by potential buyers.
AdSense isn't a good match for every site (affiliate programs aren't either, for that matter), but for niche sites that reach audiences of likely prospects, it may be the best advertising scheme around.

So far in this quarter 7 books sold.
6 purchased by my wife for her english study.
That is rubbish. If you've got a well designed content site that is generating a reasonable income off adsense, you could walk away from the site and never make another change and the income would continue to flow in for months or even years (unless you removed the adverts of course).
a) Amazon isn't for small sites.
b) Amazon pays QUARTERLY.
c) Amazon's commissions are a joke.
d) Amazon pays QUARTERLY.

I've yet to see someone who was using adsense properly on a quality site (even a mediocre one) be disappointed with it. But, I honestly hope they all leave. IMO AS has been way too lax with who they let in -- inexperienced publishers are bad for advertisers, and that's bad for experienced publishers.

Really? I've got an editorial site, and I find that evergreen content generates AdSense revenues day after day, week after week, and month after month without "aggressive marketing."

My site is an information site with a lot of content. I don't have anything to sell, therefore I am not promoting anything. I just placed adsense banners on a couple of pages a year last January. This January I earned 12 times what I did the previous year, and this trend is continuing.
My effort over the past was to construct and promote my site. At the point I added adsense, it was a visible, well visited site. The site visitors have increased slightly oer that period, but the big change in my earnings is due to how I've implemented the banners (thanks to this forum), and the fact that there are more advertisers in the program.
In any case, how do you "Aggressively market" adsense? The TOS says:-
Web pages may not include incentives of any kind for users to click on ads. This includes encouraging users to click on the ads or to visit the advertisers' sites as well as drawing any undue attention to the ads.
As far as I can see, ANY "marketing" of adsense is gonna get you booted, and you will end up here whining about how adsense booted me for no reason!
That was probably why you sold only 7 books!
If I placed Amazon on a contact page, or replaced Google's PSA with some Amazon general stuff I wouldn't sell a thing. Amazon is good for entertainment industry, when you have lots of celeb names and titles on the site, for which AdSense sometimes doesn't even have any ads, just serves PSA. Amazon is not just books, it's also DVDs, CDs, magazine subscriptions etc..
