There is no need to wait until the beta program is finished. For almost all other companies beta is equivalent to "unstable", "not finished" or something like that but Google likes the beta logo on almost every service they have. I checked on google.com and the following services are in beta:
Gmail, Alerts, Catalogs, Froogle, Groups, Local, News, Scholar, Ride Finder, Suggest, Maps, Video, SMS, Site Flavoured search box, Personalized web search, Froogle wireless.
So for Google the word "beta" is not a version indication, it is more like a trademark.
