Within two hours our CTR tanked and the CPM headed south.
Waited 24 hours and it stayed the same so I removed them again (lot of work).
The CTR and CPM started rising almost as soon as the new numbers were posted.
Am also toying with the idea that the search bar is having an adverse effect on CTR. Returns from the search bar have not been high in terms of CTR however when it is there the ads do worse.
I put AdLinks where the visitor cannot see it unless they scroll down, so they will have already decided not to click on the AdSense block at the top of the page.
Has your earnings per click also dropped?

Just a suggestion... if you have access to SSI or something like this function, it's a really good idea to carve out the section of your page where you put ads and such that *might* change, particularly, if it's universally applied on a lot of pages.. that way, a change in things allows you a lot less work.. change the include code, bingo.. done on to the next project..

EPC fell about 40%.

We use a WYSIWYG (FP 2002) which limits things we can do. Also many pages on this particular site have different set-ups and so a common location would not work.
I also try and place our ads in locations that are natural breaks in the content. It seems to work great. Good CPM and CTR considering the bid amounts of the advertisers which I have a rough idea about as they compete in my AdWords terms although they are not direct competitors.
