Actually, they do.

I just tested and am using adsense on 404's. (i recently overhauled a site) and despite the title 'page not found' the ads that show are directly related to the search terms used to find the page ;)

They should be similar because that is what Adsense is all about, especially if you are searching.

To test it Nick bookmark the page you found, delete your cache and see if they are the same ads.

The ads should be relevant to the page, and if that comes up in a SERP should therefore be relevant to the search.

ADD in it would be best to test it on a page that has been targetted rather than a 404. Putting ads on a 404 even for test purposes is not a good idea imho.

Well, it's fully tested. It works.

In my case it makes sense. My site has changed dramatically, I can no longer offer certain subjects but the user can be told that the page on longer exists and be given some nice alternatives...

If you are overhauling a site, one of the things to realize is that once AdSense has indexed those pages, it seems to take a signigicant amount of time before they ever come back and check. So those ads could be displayed as targeted ads to whatever the previous content was on that page, before you removed the content and left the AdSense. And it will continue to show those ads until the mediabot happens to stop by to check again - then it will likely start to show PSAs.

There have been complaints on the boards here about pages with content that change frequently, because the bot does not come back on a regular basis to recheck the page.

Nick it is up to you, but I doubt that 404's fit within AdSenses TOS if you are prepared to risk it fine but I do not recommend it, especially if you plan to use AdSense on your newly designed pages etc.
