As a newbie to adsense myself, I can try to give you some good tips, tips that have helped me from making 0 dollars/pennies a day, into being able to afford a costly dedicated server, and get pretty decent monthly checks on top of that.

The best way is to just find keywords (word tracker, overture) that relate to your sites topic. Dont even consider the ads, because you are writing content for your visitors, not your ads. If you only write content for your ads, your site will be uninteresting, and you will probably get a bad CTR. Obviously, good quality traffic is the most important thing you need. Good quality traffic is traffic you get from PPC, or from the regular search results, by users that have found your site with RELEVANT keywords you bid on.

Make sure your site is themed and on topic so you can increase CTR. If a person likes and is interested in your site, your Ads will look like extra resource links for them. Your design also has to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye, and the ads probably should blend in well. Ad positioning is really a new topic though.

You should do very well if you only look at this for the long term. Thinking short term will get you nowhere. Choosing high paying keywords may work only for a short time. Only pick keywords related to your site. You do not want to rely just on a few keywords to bring you income. What happens when those high paying ads disappear? You will be even more disappointed when you see your earnings drop from $300/day to $5/day, than if you were making a stable $10/day. Its better to build your income slowly, and the natural way, this way your income should be a little bit more stable. It will not happen overnight, but it will happen.
