I've had my site up for over five years now. It's a site to bring together folks from the place of my birth - truly a labour of love. I was very happy to discover Google's Adserve recently and I'm on my way to my first cheque.

Any other oldies out there in retirement with little education struggling to suppliment the pension?

The best thing about this thread is the positives that appear for those who often businesses decide to
throw out the door ,
Even at 50 I saw age discrimination by HR departments during initial weeding out of applications .
And the many successful members here are a clear sign that there is life in us old dogs yet.

member of old UPS club but glad to say UPS no longer exists as big G has caught up with the rest of the world in banking practices

They'll have to adjust their thinking at some point. In just a few short years, 25% of the u.s. population will be 50 or over. I think this is projected for 2008.

At 40, I'm at the tail end of the baby boom myself.

Hi all,

I just turned 50, but have had my site up since 1997.
Very little of my income is from adsense, as according to OV stats only about 7000 people a month use keywords related to my business, which doesn't mean a lot of
potential for clicks ;~(. But like many I'm branching out
and putting up more pages about what interests me in the hope that it will generate more adsense dollars. From what I've seen here it can be done, and it's nice to know I'm not the only wrinkly here ;~)

I am 40 years old and I have been with Adsense for around 17 months.

I passed most of my knowledge on to my daughters and they run now their own Adsense websites.

Looks like I'm one of the youngest so far - 22 :).

Spent over 10 years doing web development anyway although I didn't consider making any money from it until approximately a year ago.

And like many others have said, it's thanks to the rest of you that I've learnt much of what I now know. :)

Writers don't retire; they just keep typing until the ribbon wears out. (And if you don't understand that metaphor, you're obviously not old enough for the AdSense 55!)
How about knowing what Royal, Smith-Corona and Underwood are? Ring a bell for anyone?

I'm 23, I started my sites as a sophmore in college about 3 years ago. I majored in economics, but by the time I graduated about 10 months ago i was making about 3 times what i would make getting a job out of college. Now I'm just relaxing, working on my sites when I want. About to move to Florida. Considering buying a condo in Southwest Florida and also one in my home town in sothern coastal NJ. I love the beach.

I just hope things can continue the way they are. I'm always worried that I'll wake up one day and things will be gone. his is what gives me motivation to continue to develope sites and diversify the business. I do about 30% of my revenue from Adsense and the other 70% from other website means.

Ah, nice to see people using AdSense on real sites that help people, as opposed to hideous made-for-Adsense things. Good luck with it :)

33 Here. And I probably pay enough in adwords to support 2-3 of the UPS club members here -- I know of at least one LOL

Just getting started on sites to make use of adsense -- maybe we can recoup some of our adwords money!

They'll have to adjust their thinking at some point. In just a few short years, 25% of the u.s. population will be 50 or over. I think this is projected for 2008.

Why would they have to adjust their thinking? If it's young punks running things, they'll go for the cheap labor in a heartbeat -- and surely we've all learned there's always someone willing to do our job for less money (and less quality, but I haven't seen too many companies truly care about this -- those that do are the Fortune 100 companies with zero debt and large cash reserves).

At 37, I have a while to go before I'm at retirement age but I'm focusing on my sites lately so that I have some money to retire with. :)

I've been a computer consultant for about 12 years and I'm nearing the end of my marketability. Companies are more interested in hiring 20 somethings who are willing to work 60+hrs/week and less interested in people who would like to see their kids for more than an hour a night.

So hopefully I will be joining the UPS club in the future and won't have to worry about getting hired anymore.

46 yr old Programmer downsized twice in the last 2 yrs thanks to outsourcing, so I threw in the towel, (hopefully for good) now most of my income is from Adsense and some consulting. I know C/C++, Perl, Java, C#, and PHP if anyone is interested.

This is turning into quite a thread. I'll definitely save this one. Adsense seems to be a liberator in some regards. That's how I see contextual advertising. People with the ability to create meaningful content can finally be rewarded.

33 here. Have worked in sales and marketing for many years and have always worked with my companies web site. Had a couple of very bad hobby sites for a few years. (I didn't even want to use them.) My latest employer needed traffic so I made a plan to better SEO their site (still not implemented) and introduced them to Adwords (going strong). This rekindled my interest in developing my own sites. Adsense isn't a real moneymaker for me but I have "big plans" for the future and am taking baby steps trying to learn CSS, PHP, etc. so I don't have to spend so much time coding.

40 years here, 20 years programming.

Adsenser since 2 months, if I smoked I could pay my sigarettes with it.
But I feel just at the start of a long road!

I worked in technology all my life until retirement. Radio, radar, industrial electronics, and finally IT. Without the internet there would be a big hole.

Now 68. Ah, to be 58 again!

[ depression proof investments ]

You mean You invest in solar and wind energy?

You invest to lower Your energy usage by better equipment?

You invest in a house creating more energy by solar energy than the own usage?

I know no other depression proof investments.

I was talking about investments for the next economic depression: gold, silver, real estate, tangibles and paying off debts (which they are now).

21 Here...

I am splitting my time between working on my site and working on School.

Currently I am 30% towards my monthly earnings goal for when I graduate in less than a year and go onto a PHD program.

I am hoping this website can replace the need to have a job at Best Buy while I am doing my PHD.

53 - I've worked from home for 25 years(!) and decided 10 years ago that driving 60,000 and flying 250,000 miles a year was a ridiculous way to market our trade widgets therefore took the decision to fully develop our fledgling web sites into serious business brochure sites.

Obviously it was a bit too soon for many to realise the impact the Net would have on their working lives and it's worked out well.

Average about 80 hours a week but I can do what I like when I like and usually go to the pub every night about 11.30 pm for a couple of hours to chat with other silvermasters:-)

Maybe some of them will post now that I've mentioned them!

Just turned 28 and putting up my second site early next week.

I've only had my first up for about 3 weeks or so.

Hopefully with a lot of hard work, and a bit of luck I can make this my full time jobin 8-12 months.

I'm 43 and my wife is 50 going on 30 and she still does half the web work.

We both 'retired' years ago after selling off our first wildly popular website. We travel a bunch, throw lotsa parties and keep ALL our spare income 'depression-proof' too.

If I had it to do all over, I'd have skipped the CS degree and gotten a 4 year jump start in REAL LIFE programming.

Freedom: "...and paying off debts"
Since when is that depression-proof? I was COUNTING on hyper-inflation anyway so that I could pay off all the low-interest debt I run up today with a single day's earnings through inflation-proof Adsense or whoever is in the lead 3 years from now ;) (I figure if inflation continues to go up, so will bids either on or off Adsense)

Smith-Corona? too strenuous for my carpal tunnel, how about at least a correcting Selectric, or a Wyse or the DEC VT-52/78 wordprocessor terminal I started on?
