Just saw an ad with a phone number in it. I'm surprised that is allowed at all as it can greatly reduce CTR for that advertiser. No click = no income for Google or anyone else.

Thanks EFV. I still don't like it - looks like a miniature infomercial.

Yes it has been allowed for as far back as I can remember...

Well... Unless they phone the number - in which case the advertiser gets the income but you and google get nothing...

I've seen these ads on other sites but I doubt that someone would call the number of company without any information about it or it's products.

I wouldn't be too worried about this either.

As an adwords advertiser, I sometimes will do an ad that says something like "Buy widgets for $100", putting the price in there to discourage people who are not willing to spend $100 from clicking. That can work to weed out garbage clicks if the price is right, but I've also tried putting a phone # in and it doesn't discourage clicks.

Actually I don't think it's a bad ploy for the right product.

I have a couple of Adsense advertisers on our widget directory site doing this and by displaying their phone numbers it seems they actually give the visitors the information as to whether or not the product they are seeking can be located in their phone number area.

This works well for my expensive widget products which are not stocked by all and sundry, only by specialist outlets and specifically for these products in the UK.

I do know these advertisers personally and they have told me that this does successfully work for them and they continue to advertise with Adsense which must mean something.

For low cost products and outside of one's targeted area I would imagine it may not work.
