He told me that it goes by content and not keywords.
I think your friend is correct.
When a keyword matching an ad is found, the highest paying ad is returned to the site running adsense.
I don't think this statement is entirely true. The ads showing aren't to be the highest paying ads but the highest ranking ads for that particular page and their location. Note that the highest ranking ad can be a lower paying ad.
Based on my experience, the ads showing on your page are based several factors. These are some of them:
- the page theme
- the keywords close to your ad location. If you put Adsense on the top of the page the ad type will be difference to the ads at the bottom in a multi-topic page.
- the first ad unit will have the highest ranking ads provided the keywords are evenly distributed through out the page.
- the page/site establishment
- ...
The best way to find out what type of ads will be shown on your sites is to test them out.
what do you mean content keywords.
so you mean like if i made an article about basketball it would take that as a keyword.
Google will pick whatever words seem to be most common on that page. If you post an article about basketball, you'll probably write the word "basketball" repeatedly in the natural course of the article, and Google will pick up on that and serve that page ads about basketball.
if so what happens if i have like 10 articles on my site what would happen
Google would serve ads to each page individually. The basketball page would get basketball ads, the baseball page would get baseball ads, etc. Go to a few general sites that have Adsense ads and watch how the ad topics change with the pages to see how it's done.
The one exception to the rule that I've noted is when Google can't figure out what the page's main keywords are. In that case, Google usually serves charity ads, but occasionally it'll serve ads that relate to other pages on my site. Has anyone else seen this happen?
