Non-productive banners

I've been trying to work out why my income has been slowly dissapearing - wondering if it's anything I've done. The last few months have been consistently good, and January was even better. End of Jan the slide in price per click started.

Late January I added extra banners on key pages. One at the bottom as well as the original one at the top of the page. I was under the impression that extra banners made no difference, however I'm not so sure. The banners I added rarely had a click.

My CTR and eCPM were affected by having more than one banner, as expected. However, I am wondering if the reason my earnings started to slide is that smart pricing picked up the change in ctr and this somehow affected my earnings per click. I did email Google, but their reply said nothing of course.

I have removed the unproductive banners to see what happened. Guess what - the ctr, eCPM, price per click and earnings are all back up to what they were before.

Now I've been around here long enough to know that this idea may be complete nonsense, and we all get statistics that vary wildly. However, it does seem a bit of a coincidence, and not beyond the bounds of possibility.

So my message is, if you have extra banners on your site, just make sure that if they don't earn their place that you pull them!

Question - what does google bot consider a banner to be? Any image with a link?
