Dormant Programmable Search and AdSense

Several years ago I switched from using Google Programmable Search (then called Custom Search) to using search via a WordPress plugin (so no longer had AdSense for search). I have now switched back the Programmable Search. However, what seems odd to me is that when I went back to review Programmable Search in order get the code, I checked out the Statistics and Log information and was surprised to see that hundreds of queries a day were still being made.

Does anyone have insight on how this would happen? I realize the Google hosted search URL was still active, but I have no idea where someone would find this (it doesn't appear in a Google search as far as I can tell). And even if some how this was found and someone searched, I have no record of any AdSense revenue for Search during this time, even though hundreds of thousands of queries appear (you would think some percentage of these would be legitimate searches and some would result in an ad click), and the ad monetization option was never turned off.

If anyone has any insight on this I would welcome your thoughts.

If someone had scraped your site and has that page hosted somewhere you might see that, but unless you have allowed earnings from 'anywhere' you would not be seeing payments. I believe the default setting only pays for clicks on your verified web properties and does not allow earnings from anywhere your code might be found. You would need to look at the settings.

The reason most people do not enable that feature is because imagine finding your ad code earning money from a site you wouldn't want your family to visit. That can affect your account.

Is there a way I can find out whether the search code does exist on some website?

You could try searching for exact match using "quoted text" showing a portion of your ad script - the text on your page where your account is included would show where it is found. BUT I have found that it is a kind of on and off reliable test in that today I get results with that syntax, tomorrow it does not work that way. You can try using different search engines and different browsers on different days. It works best if you live within the continental US.

Possibly searching only for your AdSense publisher ID from your code could help - with or without quotes.
