So, overall, I do fairly well with internet income. I would say my site averages an RPM of $10-12 overall over every ad network that I use (outside of January). Easy street, right? But over the span of a few years since the Adsense honeymoon ended and a million other ad networks popped up, I've allowed my site to become jammed up with ads, majorly. I'm realizing the need to clean house and start fresh, as what im doing now is not sustainable over the long term, BUT I'm also not looking forward to having a gigantic income drop. Has anyone been able to achieve a high RPM through the right mix of networks (Adsense, header bids, etc) while keeping the ads at a reasonable, sustainable level? Or should I just get ready to watch my income collapse?

Often times you'll find your income is the same (or sometimes better) with fewer ad placements. "Greedy" ad placements turn off users, disincentivize them to turn off ad blocking on your site and can decrease page views. Though RPM is important, your overall income is more important.

I have found that minimizing the height of headers and white space above the fold to pull ads higher up helps increase earnings. While many ads below the fold aren't terribly effective. One or two below the fold is what I use generally. There is no overall blanket solution to decreasing ads and maintaining income levels, it requires experimenting with your specific niche, design and ad network mix. I would consider doing A/B testing two different ad layout schemes at the same time, otherwise, your data is not valid as ad income changes during different times of the time.
