Wow! Some people here remember TV's without a remote.

Heh! Heh! Nice to hear from the children.

I'm old enough to remember when ice was delivered by horse and cart [there was no refrigeration] as was your daily bread delivered the same way. Some folks relied upon "Bush Coolers" to keep items cool.

There was no television, only that new fangled radio which was itself only around 15 years old.

About one home in fifteen owned a motor vehicle, usually then a commercial vehicle. Very few people had been connected to the telephone network.

When I was born in 1942 Singapore had just fallen to the Japanese, the Battle of the Coral Sea was about to occur and The Battle of Midway was in the distance. Americans had yet to arrive in Australia to a camp nearby where we lived in preparation for Guadalcanal nearly six months later. As a kid we had scoured around years later uncovering booty like practice hand grenades, mortar shells, and target bombs.

My district, only 30 Km [18 miles] from Sydney was predominantly poultry farms for egg production [see below] with some market gardening for vegetables.

I'm 75 and a proud "senior citizen" - never the impolitely named geezer.

Trivia on egg production - When I was 20 in the Australian Army in 1962, out in the field with a field kitchen in operation for breakfast I was having toast, two rationed sausages, and my slice of egg. The slice of egg was from cooked powdered egg.

To my horror/amusement when I looked at the discarded powdered egg can? The date on it was 1941. My breakfast was not only older than myself, but was likely sourced from my home town.

Beat that.

49 years here. That is less than half a century, but old enough to have worked with punch tape.

I still get paper checks from an affiliate program that we've been using for years. Fortunately, I remember how to endorse them. :-)

45. Very familiar with the lack of TV remotes, pre-cable TV, pre-internet, paper checks (still get a few and still write a few) days.

IanCP, were you born in Singapore or is that just a date reference?

I grew up in North Carolina (US) and learned to use a telephone by watching Andy Griffith. All you had to do was pick it up, talk into the device and say, "Sarah, get me Sheriff Taylor" and that's all there was to it.

And just three TV channels: NBC, CBS and ABC. We all watched the same newscasts and the same TV shows. Seemed like we were all in this together.

@Chrispcritters
IanCP, were you born in Singapore or is that just a date reference?

Born in Sydney. Singapore, used as you correctly surmised was a reference, it had fallen 37 days or about 5 weeks before I was born. I often wondered how my Mum coped at that late stage of her pregnancy, along with three other older children, and my father away unknown somewhere at war..

That was further compounded not long after on the night of 31 May – 1 June 1942 when three Japanese midget submarines attacked Sydney Harbour.

Air raid sirens, complete blackout, and my Mum trying to warm my baby bottle... Even from 18 miles away the explosions of depth charges, artillery fire, a Japanese mother submarine offshore firing into Sydney Harbour suburbs. That Mum could well remember very well.

Myself? Well fed, I slept through most of the whole drama. My sister the eldest. then nearly 17, always offered a totally different view of my uncooperative behaviour. My two bothers 12 and 5 just wished I would shut up and not attract the [presumed] invading Japanese. We had an air raid shelter. A good play pen, cubby house for kids. To our great angst, my father filled that in when he returned home from the war in the middle of 1946.

I was born after Sirhan Sirhan shot Bobby Kennedy (if he did) and before Neil Armstrong walked on the Moon (if he did).

My first computers were (in order) a Sinclair ZX81, Lazer/VZ200, Sharp MZ than a PC clone.

I like free jazz, Springsteen, woodworking and long walks on the beach.

Are you single? Should we start a dating forum here?

I saw Springsteen play in Asbury Park just after Born to Run hit the radio.

41 here... also in North Carolina, and also grew up watching Andy Griffith and Little House on the Prairie! We had 2 TV stations (CBS out of Charlotte and NBC), and could maybe get 2 more if one of us (usually me cause I was the youngest) went outside and turned the antenna while somebody else yelled and told us when to stop turning. So for the most part, we just watched whatever was on CBS or NBC.

The TV didn't have a remote, but I remember when we got a VCR! My parents got it at Curtis Mathis, a rent-to-own place, and paid an unGodly amount for it... but Curtis Mathis threw in a year of free VHS rentals, so I guess it worked out. That VCR had a wired remote, so if we left the TV on channel 3 then we could use the wired remote to flip between CBS and NBC. That was awesome! lol

I've been self employed and working online since 1995.

My first computer was a CTX that I paid close to $1,000 for. It had Windows 95, a 1.2G hard drive, 500MB of RAM, and a 14.4k modem. I didn't have it long before I figured out how to start doing hardware upgrades myself, and immediately added another 500MB of RAM and a 56k modem. I think I still have it around here somewhere...

This might be kinda sad, but I think that we, the coders, are a dying breed. I used to do web design for clients, but stopped when the local demand died a few years ago and moved on to managing my own sites. But there's a local web design company now that has done literally hundreds of sites within the last year! The difference... they just use Wordpress, and can sell websites for $200-300 where my custom work started at $2,000. So this is a company of 5 employees with a huge portfolio, and not one of them have a clue how to even code in HTML.

I suspect that if we were on a Wordpress or Joomla message board, we would see a group of much younger people. And that makes me sad :-(

And remember horse-drawn carts delivering milk at the end of the day.

I remember the last rag-and-bones man in New York City (or at least I think he was): He and his assistant could still be seen riding around Manhattan in a junk-filled horsecart in the mid-1960s. (I once saw them headed up Sixth Avenue below 14th street in Greenwich Village, with the horse appearing unfazed by the buses and cars.)

Wow! Some people here remember TV's without a remote.

I remember black and white 405 line TV.

And horse drawn milk carts - well only one operated by a local dairy. The delivery man would take a hand basket and deliver to three or four houses while the horse followed him down the street. Automated cars? Nothing new under the sun!
