My site has home page bounce rate at 9% and total average 21%.

Is this normal high or low? Looking forward to hearing more about your sites?

I always thought 0% was the most highly desired .... then reality got stuffed with facts ... Some of my sites are as low as 8% others as high as 75%. Depends on the site and thee info.

It depends on the nature of the content. Think of a weather website.

For example, you Google "weather in seattle", visit the landing page, see that it's raining and then you leave with your question answered.
However, this counts as a "bounce".

What many publishers do is actually redefine what a bounce is to them. Have a look at this article on adjusted bounce rate: [moz.com...]

Bounce? I go to example site to find the answer to a specific question, if it answers the question then I leave. Sometimes I might print the page. If it doesn't answer I back out to Google again and try something else.

It must be a very long time ago I stayed on a site and willingly looked around.

Today I received a message for an item I had purchased was shipped along with a tracking number and a link to the couriers site.

The home page of the couriers site was useless [this is a big freight organisation in Australia] and after fruitlessly wasting time - I Googled the site name with "check tracking". That worked for me - ordinarily I would spend about 10 seconds on the proper landing page.

Bounce rate?

Bounce rate is single-page session... These single-page sessions have a session duration of 0 seconds since there are no subsequent hits after the first one that would let Analytics calculate the length of the session
So "bounce rate" only pertains to analytics.
