Reducing ad units - worth an experiment?

Has anyone tried reducing the ad units on a page for better revenue?

I have three ads on my main site - leaderboards top/bottom within an article, and an MPU/column on the right-hand side.

I'm contemplating removing the bottom leaderboard altogether. My theory is that it will increase the bid price for the top two, and significantly enhance the viewability score.

Does anyone else here have experience of removing ad units in this way?

I've tried removing my third adblock before, positioned way at the bottom of my articles/pages, but only found that my overall revenue declined - no other stats seemed to change. Ran the test for a few days and it hurt.

I periodically remove ads, because my pages vary in length depending on what time of year it is (and how many events I'm posting) I don't notice a decline, but I don't usually see much of a bump either.

I have removed ads before. Same as netmeg... did not see a decline, but saw no increase either.

I went back up again this past winter, but I think I will be once again removing one ad this fall to help with page speed.

We use a maximum of one AdSense unit per page. (I saw "a maximum" because some of our pages don't have AdSense ads.)

I experimented with two ad units at one point, but in terms of additional revenue, the second ad unit wasn't worth the screen real estate that it took up.

On the two or three occasions I've tried this experiment, my overall revenue declined (about a week), until I put the unit back in.
