I've been trying a different layout for the last seven days and one ad unit has given me all of three clicks and something like £1.50 p. Do you think it's time to bin it and try something else?

Impossible to tell with such a low amount of data. Check out this statistical significance test to figure out at what point you can really make a decision based on your numbers: [getdatadriven.com...]

Same answer as above, but note also that when I added media net ads on the same page as adsense the 'above the fold' adsense ad earned less, which I attributed to the media net ads causing the adsense to load even more slowly than normal (perhaps media net ads aren't async and load first), and I wonder if the same is happening on your site. When I looked at the page the top ad took a long time to appear and I would have moved further down the page before seeing it.
You should also be aware that your 'fixed to the bottom of the page ad' is hiding your cookie message (on an ipad, didnt look elsewhere) , and in certain circumstances your dropdown menu overlaps the top ad which might mean ad clicks get ignored as potentially false clicks.
