Happy new years! 1/1/16's RPM is roughly 50~60% of december's average. Hope everyone will do better later as the time goes by.

Maybe it's me, but the text ads are looking so ugly these days I'm thinking I should go all image. AdSense needs a new coat of paint.

December was not too bad for me; RPM was up leading into Christmas compared to prior months. I was expecting a bad start to January, as that's what happened last year. And sure enough, it's down. A little moreso than I was expecting. =/

Let this ride never end. I'm just skyrocketing in comparison to any recent stretch. I expect a crash any minute, but right now I can move up from the bread and water diet. At least for a few days anyways.

Is this a race to the bottom? My RPM for today so far is 0.09!

Amazingly yesterday was not my lowest-ever PVs however today doesn't look very promising.

Page RPM has been TERRIBLE so far in 2016. And here I thought 2015 started out badly...

It also turns out that I had the worst year I've ever had in 10 years of Adsense, last year.

How are people making money with mobile? Its so bad that I might dumpe adsense on mobile and just replace it with one of my CPM networks.

We just launched our mobile site last night (dynamic serving).

One ad position in particular, a 300x250 within an article (which Google says does very well). And yes it does well, 340 clicks in that spot = 11 dollars! That's like 5 to 7 cents a click. If I had 340 clicks on any ad on our desktop, it would be like 200-plus in revenue.

It's crap like this that wants me to turn my mobile view off. My friends are talking me out of it and telling me that we just launched the mobile and to give it a few days or at least 1-2 weeks to regulate.

But how can anyone stand this. They push you to go mobile or you lose rankings and pay a fraction for what a mobile clicks gets on desktop. My CPM networks are outperforming Adsense across the board on mobile right now and that's scary.

2015 was a regression back to what I was earning 5 years ago, it wasn't a good year with Adsense at all. I'm still grateful to make any kind of online income but the dream of one day doing it full time with my current properties is slowly dissipating, unless I come up with something new or find alternative programs. I find it strange how Adsense took such a dive while a CPM program like Tribal Fusion keeps getting better.

After a good November and even better December (no surprises there), bracing for the two worst months of the year for me.

RPM in January has been abysmal, as expected. I'll just have to wait it out until March comes around, even though things should be somewhat better in February.

The time spent managing Adsense is not worth it. Unscrupulous Adsense publishers are killing Google's business.

I really wish there was a way to "pause" AdSense ads. Today Google is paying 5 cents a click in the U.S. - I'd rather ads not show at all than accept nickels when normally those clicks are 50 cents. Removing ads is too big a process (and Google knows it). It's shady that there is not a "pause" ads option (that I am aware of) outside of using an ad server.

Does anyone know why it's taken such a drastic fall? Are there fewer ads available or something?

With the holiday season over there is no point in advertising right now. Advertisers exhausted their budgets in the run-up to and during the holidays.

Based on my 13 year experience, January is my worst month of the year. Considering that the New Year came on a weekend this year, that made it even worse. Most new ad campaigns will likely begin tomorrow, January 4th. Since we debuted our mobile site on Saturday at the stroke of Midnight, that made it even worse. :(

Today was the worst days in the last 3 months for rpm. Good to hear I am not alone. For those that say january is typically bad. Is the first 2 weeks worse than the second 2 weeks. Or is the whole month equally bad. Or another way to phrase. How long does the crappyness of the post holidays last.

It should pick up around mid month and really settle around the third week. And trends slightly higher until the end of quarter.

Overall first quarter will be "bad" compared to 4th quarter holiday season for most consumer centric niches.

Since I rolled out a new mobile site, my Adsense rep explained to me that Adsense Mobile has its own algorithm that is different from the Desktop Algorithm, so the minute my site was tabbed "mobile friendly" the entire makeup of the website shifted after the mobile clicks that I was receiving on my desktop-only website were murdered unfortunately.

They keep serving me with these low-end CPM ads that are barely 5 cents a click. So even though this one ad had like 800 clicks, it barely did ANY money. If this keeps up I just might dump Adsense from mobile and keep it going only on desktop and tablet.

Has anyone had any monetary success on mobile with other networks (that means more success than with Adsense)?

Theoretically, it is very difficult for any other network to give better results for publishers. All these 'other networks' compete with adwords by offering better results to advertisers. Thus, it can't be better for us (publishers) unless they keep very less percentage for themselves which may not be possible in a long run. Also, these 'other networks' can't know as much about the users as google knows, so I doubt their ad quality can be better, however, it's probably true that google treat small adsense publishers as second rate citizens and the good inventory goes only to premium publishers and google sites which is something 'other networks' won't do.

Also, mobile is something where users just don't click that much on ads and that's causing trouble not just for us but google and other networks as well.

There is only one way to have anything perform better than adsense and that's affiliate income. My wife runs a home decor blog and her affiliate income is almost thrice that of adsense. Users are not clicking on ads but are clicking on product links (affiliate links).

@magician. I'm not having any click issues. The ad spot I have is getting as much as 800 clicks per day. I would assume there is a CPM network that would pay more than Google is paying me, which is barely 5 cents a click right now. We have high end traffic, tons of organic traffic and I was making money hand over fist for years. But once we introduced a mobile site, the Adsense went to crap. They were paying me an average of 26 cents a click for mobile users to click on desktop ads. I was getting half the clicks, but making ten times the money.

5 cents a click is really very low. I think things should settle down in a while as you mentioned you have recently debuted the mobile site. Also, everyone has witnessed very low RPMs in first 3 days of Jan so far (even for older website) so it's probably double whammy for you.

Also, mobile clicks are always cheaper for advertisers to get because -

1. they don't convert that easily (from my personal experience of managing a big adwords account) probably because of low attention span on mobile.
2. the spending power of desktop users is still better than mobile users.

So, from advertisers' point of view - mobile traffic is about high number (as it has brought almost everyone to internet and users spend more time on internet) and desktop users is about quality. Both are important so you spend more to get clicks from desktop and less on mobile.

@magician, I tried to switch the low performing ads to "text only" as I noticed since going mobile, the mobile inventory is pumping in a lot of horrible low paying CPM ads.

But when I tried to change it to text only, I was getting nothing but blank ads half the time. I would say out of every ten to 12 pages views I would get a text ad (I've seen others compain of similar issues with text ads on mobile). So I changed it back.

That's an interesting "statement/claim" for the rep to say, if so I wonder if it came in July 2015?
