I run a forum and whenever a new topic is entered (and thus a new page created) the charity ads come up.
My questions is this - is there any way to speed up the google crawl of the page in order to view targeted ads? Since the thread often has a life of about 30 minutes (the time it takes for people to view and respond), it is critical that I show targeted ads right from the start.
Any thoughts ...
1. sometimes they have ads straight away, based on either the site as a whole in some way, or keywords in path names.
2. some have reported many cases of ads taking from 24 hours and even more to go live in certain periods.
3. We usually find that the ads are "farily well" targeted straight away or in 30 minutes, but after a few hours they become even better targeted.
4. Some pages will ALWAYS have argeted ads if the adsense robot cannot effectivelu determine the theme, or if nobody is advertising in that area, or your page contains "negative" or other types of content.
5.Some pages initially have ads, then run public service ads for a few days, then revert, then the cycle starts again.
I would think generally if your threads go dead very quick, and get very few views after an intial hour surge, Adsense will not be worthwile/effective in the fullness of time. This may apply to many message board type pages. But maybe they will work on your front page and descriptions of message board sections? Adsense FAQ does say Adsense works better with pages with static content thant dont change much. I guess a thread is always changing.
There are things you can do to improve the targetting however. Does the thread only show the message, or does it include your header, footer, navigation? Make sure these are keyword rich.
It will still take awhile to target the ads specifically to that message, but the more homogenous your website, the better chance of getting theme targetting.
I was thinking of displaying different ads (not google) for the first 30 minutes a post is alive and then switching to google ads after the period has elapsed.
Could any "tricks" be applied - such as putting the the content in a bottom frame, and the top frame will be static and thus "targeted" consistenly?

Before targeted AdSense ads have any chance of being displayed, the AdSense JavaScript code must be implemented on the page and the page must be visited once causing the JS code to be executed, which will trigger the AdSense Mediapartners bot to visit the page at some point (a few minutes or longer). I haven't done any testing to see if it matters whether the JS code must be implemented when the bot visits.
So you may be able to do something like what you describe, but you'd probably want to automate with code to enable AdSense for the first human page visit, then disabled the AdSense code and enable your alternate advertising until X minutes after Mediapartners visits that page according to your webserver's logs. If you're a programmer or have one available it would be straightforward. If you planned to do it manually with many pages I think it would be very time-intensive, much less effective due to human delays and a nightmare overall.
You don't need frames, that will mess up the targetting anyway. Use includes for your nav elements and a table for the overall page.
I hope google will address the issue as soon as possible.
