Firefox 42.0 and Adsense

Hello,

Is it me, or the new private mode of Firefox 42 blocks Adsense ?

The resource at "https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js" was blocked because tracking protection is enabled.

What does this mean for your website?

Most obviously, it means that when tracking protection is enabled:

- content served from third-party trackers will not be visible to users
- your site won't be able to use third-party advertising or analytics services that engage in tracking

Hi Kaszinky, welcome to the forums. There's more info about Firefox' new Private Mode here in the Firefox forum: [webmasterworld.com...] and it looks like they block 3rd party content from tracking entities.

In effect, the new private browsing feature of FF is an integrated ad blocker... if those ads are from third party sources and tracking js....

Just checked, my FF 42.0 was updated yesterday, and is "up to date". Haven't noticed one difference all day, see the usual AdSense ads.

You would have to select PRIVATE BROWSING to see the difference. If you run FF out of the box (standard install) you won't see anything.

Mine came out of the box came with it already in Private mode that's why I started experimenting with it immediately. I wonder how that happened?

The difference on seriously heavy ad sites is, as you say, amazing.

I wonder what other FF 42.0 users see under Options/Privacy? Anybody?

I suppose that how much of an issue this is may depend on how many of your visitors use FF 42.+

For me that's not a big deal because FF traffic has been falling off rapidly as Chrome gained users.

Right now in another FF Tab, of all things "Crossword Clues" page, there is a large AdSense Ad to the left of the page containing 3 X 5 product ads for every item I recently searched for..

This includes one for: "RJ45 Cat5e Joiner Coupler Connector Cable Extender For Ethernet LAN" priced at $A 8.58 ea, presumably plus postage.

I purchased two of them locally on eBay last week at a cost of $A 1.64 each, post free. Yes, they are identical items.

I despair at this AdSense IBA approach where I see AdSense Ads AFTER I've made the purchase. Perhaps they might be relevant where someone is immediately searching for hotels, flight or entertainment tickets on a Smartphone - I dunno.

I noticed the new feature tracking guard in private browsing that blocks the Adsense Ads.

My Firefox 42.0 is right up to date, and I still can't see anything about AdBlocking anywhere.

You can opt out of IBA: [networkadvertising.org...] and it works - though it must be done per user and per device.

Under Privacy in Tracking I have two options, in fact the first two items on the page:

1. Request that sites not track you - I have the box ticked
2. Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows - I have the boxed ticked

If you don't have these check boxes I have no idea!

And since the introduction of this using the Net has been a pleasure again:-)

I have both ticked, probably always have been ticked - either way, I see no differences between today and years ago. I still see AdSense ads everywhere I go, mainly advertising what I purchased last week.

It has never been a problem for me at any time.

The only things I do differently is not allow Adobe Flash Player, automatically playing videos on sites is a pain. Also I use self-destructing cookies, with my own white list.

It not only blocks Adsense but also Amazon. An old Amazon aStore that I trialled long ago and never bothered to take down just comes up as a totally blank page. Ads from a different affiliate network display OK.

Proving yet once again, for numerous reasons, to never use Amazon fancy code and just stick to the "short plain vanilla text links".

The news that Astores are now hit will send a lot more than ripples through the Amazon Associates forums.

Actually aStores are no longer supported, the existing ones will continue but can't be updated.
Embedded YouTube videos are displayed.

It doesn't take the ads out of Google site search, those still push the actual results below the fold.

Hell would freeze over before I ever did that. At the moment, FF has 18 tabs open [I use History/Restore Previous Session] IE 11 has 12 tabs. Yes, I do extensive clean ups of lots, and lots of things at least once a month which I call housekeeping. I have very specific reasons why I work this way. It is also why I have the best CPU, memory etc. I can afford - so I can max out my Desktop to the limit.

Back on topic, ads etc don't bother me. I'm starting to trial the script from a companion topic to measure the impact of AdBlockers may/or maybe not having on my AdSense impressions.

As for the Privacy settings etc in FF, I might try and explore it in Chrome which I only use for experiments like this, or gosh even The Edge.
