Check out Ampedsense. It's a plugin for ad placement within a page. I also heard many good things about Ad Injection (also a plugin), didn't try it though.

You have to use the shortcodes instead of the widgets. Or you can create a function in the theme and embed the PHP there.

With AmpedSense you don't even need shortcodes anymore. It automatically injects ads in the (relative) positions you want, for example 1/4 down center or bottom of post right. Depending on the theme you might get issues with the engine correctly detecting mobile vs desktop traffic, but in most cases you should do just fine
