Advertiser pays AdSense (via Google checkout/Paypal) using credit card
Campaign begins and ends according to info fed above
AdSense pays me accordingly at the end of the month under "Direct Revenue"
Speaking for myself, I don't mind if AdSense manages it fully & takes a cut, as long as they do heavy-lifting themselves like they do with regular inventory. I'd rather spend time webmastering/publishing than sales/accounting. :D

Right, but what's in it for Google? That's why there's AdSense. Ease of implementation, but less control.

I'm with zdgn on this. If I'm going to market and sell ad space, I can do that without Google. An end-to-end process as outlined above would be quite attractive though. G opened the door to advertising for many publishers when they introduced Adsense. Many though don't have the technical chops to put together a full advertising sales and ad distribution system on their site. You need some form of integrated accounting and tracking to pull this off. Something as described above would truly open the door for G to use publishers sites as a marketing space for advertising purchases and would expand their reach across the web. There's also the situation where advertisers want to target a specific site so specific sites could open advertising sales opportunities for Google in ways that might expand on the reach G has via the Adwords system. I think they're on the right track but it needs to be a more comprehensive solution if they want me to use it.

Has anyone looked at the recommended price that Adsense suggests you should directly sell?
I was shocked at how high of a price Adsense was suggesting that I sell my unit for.

Well don't they take a commission on your earnings? That being the case, of course they want you to try and ask for the highest possible prices.
Google is not out to help you be more successful, their primary purpose is for them to make money first and foremost. I wouldn't put ANY trust into any suggested data from Google; with regards to this or Adwords.
