If I someone were to pay me to add something like ‘This page sponsored by www.abc.com’ to a page running AdSense would that constitute a completive ad? I’ve read through the Adsense Help section and didn’t find anything. Thanks.

I wouldn't do it. It doesn't make sense. I have that on pages where I don't run Adsense.

We have a home page sponsor ($400/month is what we charge). We do not run AdSense on the page, but that isn't because we think it would be an issue with Google (it isn’t a text ad, but more graphical in nature). No AdSense adds exclusivity for our sponsor and doesn't overwhelm the page with ads (an important consideration for us).

I believe only contextual ads are considered competitors to Google. Most of the text ads/affiliate ads are allowed if they are not matched automatically based on the context.

The best way to find out is to send an email to Adsense team and ask with details if it is OK. I am pretty sure they will say "go ahead". So try it and please report it back here.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to ask Goolge and see what they say. PS keywordguru not enough to make it worth losing my AdSense account ;).
