Could Google cause a fraudulent click?

Nightmare scenario with the mailman as a key player

I recently had a problem with my G check that resulted from my mailman misdelivering my check to a neighbor who was out of town for a few days.

It got me thinking of a nightmare scenario, that seems totally plausible:

My check is in my company name, and is delivered to my home. Say the mailman misdelivers the check to my next door neighbor, who absent-mindedly opens it. "Hmmm," they say, "a check from Google Inc. to companyname llc." Then they realize it's my address, so just to be nosy they look up companyname on the web. Bam! They find my fantastic site, and are so transfixed that they end up clicking on an Adsense ad or two as they're so pertinent to my interesting content. Since my business is totally unrelated to my home city, Klaxon alarms start going off all around the G-plex and the "Fraudulent Click SWAT Team" jumps into action, trawls through the terrabytes of logs, and says, "Hey - this idiot thinks he can get his neighbors to click on ads and we won't notice. Let's send him the ol' Sorry-You're-Busted-and-Your-Account-Disabled email!"

Poor old me gets the email and thinks, "what did I do? I thought I was following all the rules and keeping my nose clean."

Ok, a lot of what-ifs, and fortunately this didn't happen and they just put the check unopened in my mailbox. But think about it - would you want the mailman to deliver your check to your neighbor?

Oh great .. just when I finally settled into my "serenity now" groove.

Thanks for sharing that plausable nightmare scenario ;)

I really hope that that is tongue in cheek :)

If not, it gets my vote for "paranoia posting of the week" award! ;)

I think this would only cause any problems if your neighbour started clicking a few dozen times on the ads. Otherwise he's just a user using adsense like it's supposed to be used.

Hey funny thing, I just got my buddy's check in MY mailbox about a week ago. Now his company address is on the other street, not even similar to my address.

His address was clearly written on the envelope, and how it got to my home address is beyond me. Good thing I knew the guy, and returned it.

He's not in the Internet business, but I knew there was a juicy check inside. When I told the guy I work with about this, which is actually his brother in law, he jokingly said, " We could take it to the store and cash it no problem if we wanted to."

Here is another possible scenerio: Your neighbor is a crackhead and decides to cash it in. Try to prove you never got it. Hopefully that would never happen to anyone. Talk about paranoia.

Paranoia the worst thing about being an Adsense publisher.

Google should put some type of measure in place so we can stop wasting time worrying about loosing our accounts and start thinking of new sites to build.

Everyone would make more money that way.

I totally agree with you. Picture this other scenario:

As Google's accounting team is checking your account, the monitor releases the photons, electrons or whatever it does and those get captured by aliens as they travel in space. Once captured, they can re-create the computer screen just as it was in the Googleplex computer.

Of course the aliens are curious (you know how they are), so they start searching Google till the find your fantastic site and start clicking. Bye, bye adwords! I'm very worried it may happen to me. Should I e-mail them to let them know...just in case?
