OK so AdSense suggested I place a 728x90 at the top of my pages.

Tried it, worked great on part of the site, not good at all on the rest of the site. So I took it off the "not good at all" pages.

Now I get an email from G saying, "Ya know that 728x90 ad, it's getting too many impressions and not enough clicks, move it down the page, but keep it abpve the fold.

The evn included a screen shot, from MONTHS AGO, of a page that hasn't had the 728x90 for months and months.

Now if they actually looked at the page or screen shot, they'd see that a 728x90 could only fit at the top of the page, or the bottom of the page, period, no other choices unless I completely rebuilt the site.

And they must be looking at a different set of stats than the ones I see in my control panel, because the numbers they quote for share of impressions for the 728x90 are not even in the same universe, forget the planet.

I tried moving a banner from the top of a page to the very bottom - well below the fold, and it worked well.
It is an information site, and my theory is that when someone visits a page, they want to read the info and not click on ads. When they have read the info they may then be interested in ads.

Switch banners to text only and position them between the header and content area for better results (with adsense). The image ads above the header, or at the very bottom of the page(heck even in the sidebar) don't do as well.

I already have a 300x250 below the end of the content, that ad placement has done well over the years.

There's no way to insert a 728x90, or even a 468x60 ad between the top navigation and the content without rebuilding all the pages, which is a manual process on my site.

Until I put the 728 at the top of the page I've had the same basic page layout on these pages since 2004, and it worked and paid fine. That was a 300x250 below the content and a small 160x90 adlinks unit near the top of the content. Hardly a pile of overpowering ad spots.

I've taken the 728 off all my pages now.
