From Inside Adsense [adsense.blogspot.com]
We’ve actually found that link units with four terms almost always perform better than five. As a result, we’re reducing the number of topics in all link units to four for horizontal orientations and three for vertical orientations. If you’re currently using link units, this change will happen automatically.

So I wonder why they are reducing vertical Adlinks to three?

They must have tested it (I assume) I never got vertical links to work well, but I make a lot of use on the horizontal links.

Overall the results page looks better too, except if you have a dark background, they're still showing the Google logo in a white box, which doesn't look great.
