Should Adsense leave the experimenting to us?

Does anyone get frustrated with the constant design changes that google experiment with on their ads?

I use a few 336 block on my site, and like everyone else i experiment with placements, font sizes and colours. But this last week i have been watching google move the URL next to the title (on the same line) with an ugly black underline. And the only way they can get the title and URL to fit on the same line is to reduce the font size. That is quite a major change.

I appreciate that it might work for a lot of people, but surely google realise that it doesnt work for everyone.

Why dont they give US the option to move the URL? they could let us have it at the bottom, under the title, or on the same line. That way WE can experiment and find out what's best. But they dont seem to do that anymore. They just change the layout and foist it on absolutely everyone.

The constant changes also means that its harder to test things yourself, as you can no longer count on everything staying the same. If you want to run a test on an ad for 1 week, it is now highly unlikely that it will continue to use the same font-family and font-size for the whole duration.

i frequently visit my site and see the ads using different font-families for 5 minutes, before returning to normal. What is that all about? Surely google do not need to do their own testing on that, because there must be plenty of sites that aleady use that font through choice.

Is it time for google to leave the experimenting to us? If they want to change the layout then okay, fair enough, but please give US the option of changing it, instead of forcing it on us.

londrom, I've been critical about the URL placement and underlining too. It's baffling to me why they've messed up the 336 like this. Not much we can do about it though, I'm afraid.

Unlike some on this board, I'm not making anywhere what I used to from AdSense which means Google isn't making as much from my account either. Multiply that scenario by a couple of million publishers and maybe at some point AdSense will reconsider some of these design changes. That's about the only hope I have.

Google is all about the numbers and if the numbers wouldn't fit they would not do it.
You are forgetting that most publishers do not test.
The plug the code in and that is it.

Also Google's sole focus is on giving the Advertisers the best possible ROI and they really don't care much about Publishers.
They get Publishers easily but getting Advertisers to spend (more) money on AdWords is all about performance and trust.

I'd be very, very surprised if any of my experimenting, no matter how intense, would ever come even close to a fraction of the magnitude of AdSense's own, given the pool of analytical data, statistical tools and interpretive intelligence available to them. Besides, there's only so much I can do. To me, AdSense is basically what it is: you take it how it is.

I for one would rather have them do all the experimenting on ads (their expertise) while I concentrate on content and sites (mine.)

It would be great if there was an option so that we could choose to participate in Google adsense testing or opt out of these tests and be able to conduct our own tests.

Yeah I'm right there with you in regards to the 336 unit. I spent so much time testing different colors and placements of that ad, and once they made those changes on my main site this week or last week, it's been a disaster ever since. I changed the colors for a day or two and the results were even worse, so I just went back to what I had, hoping this new look will be short-lived. The one thing I just did was change the font from Verdana to Arial and that has made the title appear bigger, like it was before. But I also notice the font size and font family changing randomly on my other text units.

I'm not crazy about it (cause I do my own testing - extensively) and I don't like the weird fonts and whatnot and sure I'd love an option that would let me opt out, but it probably ain't gonna happen. Most people (as mentioned above) don't test and Google knows someone has to be doing it.

AdSense is what it is. At the moment I'm pretty happy with it.

I wonder if premium publishers get to opt out of tests?
