Timing is everything, the webspam team publicly under fire:
The fact that most content farms generate the large majority of their revenue from Google Adsense ads placed around their content has been a problem for Google. Cutts has been unequivocal on Google’s policy: “Google absolutely takes action on sites that violate our quality guidelines regardless of whether they have ads powered by Google” he said back in January on the official Google blog.

EDIT: Turned out to be a not-so-funny April 1 joke

If true, that's a real bad way to act in public.
In an off the record phone conversation she said “Screw the webspam team,” and “It’s not like people are going to start using Bing.”

They ought to keep that sort of thing behind google doors.

That is an incredibly stupid comment anyway: if it was not for the webspam team we would all be using Bing, because Google's SERPS would be flooded with spam.

Stupid? Do you want to suffer in greed?, I think Google should strictly follow webspam team advice or its days are numbered.

That Tech Crunch article is an april fools day joke (Matt Cutts tweeted it yesterday saying as much). If the follow-up comments about it are also 'in' on the joke, ignore me ;-)

I hope it is a joke.

This time they'll notice nobody is laughing.

Pranks are funny, Panda is not.

Agreed.

I'm pretty sure it is a joke, although I did believe it at first; Google search banning another department is actually something I'd believe would happen.

I thought April Fool's jokes were supposed to occur on April 1. This started on March 31 according to the Tech Crunch article date. IsApril Fool's Day being expanded into a week long event?

Zero dollars - it was a TechCrunch attempt at an April Fool, not a Google attempt. The Matt Cutts "quote" isn't real. It also isn't real that DemandMedia CEO has a yacht named The Adsense.

What is real is that businesses hurt by Panda are losing revenue, whether Adsense or any other.

Good people are loosing good jobs by the thousands because of Panda. People with families, handicapped children and special needs.

Companies and individuals have had good clean websites they have poured years of work into wiped out due to false positives.

I dont think this is anything to joke about in any damn sense and is all in extremely poor taste.

The consequence of an oligopoly in which Google is the main player.

Happens every time Google does an algo change. And for every job that got lost, the traffic ended up somewhere else, the money going to someone else that has poor crippled children to feed.

I LOVE Panda!

I no longer have to compete with low quality crap spewed by those trying to make a quick buck from India.

My traffic and earnings have doubled. My visitors are happy as am I.

Thanks Google. Keep up the good work.

Yeah our traffic has increased by 20% since Panda, and just when Adsense decides to smart-price me into the ditch.

If this keeps up, I'm going be forced to b*tch, whine, snivel, bend over and take it up the *ss.

:-)
