I just read this on CDNET from an interview with AdSense optimizer from the "AdSense in Your City Tour":

Whenever we meet with publishers, we hear one question over and over again: “How can I use AdSense more effectively to increase my earnings?” We’ve written up our top tips here and encourage you to experiment with them and see how they impact your earnings. Happy testing!

1. Maximize your AdSense coverage
In order to maximize your earnings, place three AdSense ad units and three link units on each of your pages. The more ads you display, the more opportunities you have for your users to engage with them.

Also, because some ads are paid on a cost-per-impression (CPM) basis, you will often be paid just for displaying the ads, regardless whether a user clicks on them.

Can this really be true after the Panda algo update condems "too many ads"?

I don't know, but I have been experiensing very low CTR and CPC since then, although having 3 adnuits and 3 link unit on every pages.
Besides, my CPM based ads are nearly 10% of all, wish I could increase my CPM ads.

Panda update appears to be more about thin and dupe content than AdSense, so I wouldn't sweat it just yet.

Adsense has always said use the maximum amount of ads.
But, everyone I have talked to and my own personal experience says less is better.
I've never...ever...done well with ads maxed out.
Or image ads.

Too many ads bother me, and I'm sure they bother my visitors. I have never had more than 2 oin a page. I think Google suggesting three ad blocks and two link units on a page is just what annoyed those Google asked, which helped create Panda.

Google AdSense and Google organics aren't on the same page. That's nothing new.

Google's not in it for you, they're in it for Google. Listen to what they say, but use your gut to figure out what's right for you.

These "suggestions" are all automated, and they're probably actually planned out some weeks or months ahead. The one about the ads - that's probably automatically sent to everyone who isn't running 3 ads and 2 link units on every single page of their site.

Have any of you Analytics gurus ever determined what percentage of your income link ads are bringing in compared to the percentage that block ads are bringing in? On most of my pages I'm running a 468x15 link ad at the bottom and a 728x90 (text/image) leaderboard at the very top. I've considered removing the link ads at the bottom if I could be sure it would help my income overall, it would be a big project though.
